Nigeria knocked out of Confederations Cup by Spain

Posted: 23 June 2013 Time: 23:20

Spain beat Nigeria 3-0 at the Estadio Castelao Fortaleza to top Group B and make the Confederations Cup semi-finals.

There were signs of promise from Stephen Keshi’s young Super Eagles, but their finishing often let them down, and it seemed as if Spain never really got out of third gear.

Jordi Alba opened the scoring early on, finishing off a flowing move by the Spaniards. Alba received a neat pass from his Barcelona clubmate Andreas Iniesta and skipped past three Nigerian defenders, with a lucky rebound along the way, before slotting home.

The Super Eagles caused problems for Spain’s defence in the first half. John Mikel Obi was set up by some good work from Joseph Akpala, but his attempt was thwarted by Sergio Ramos.

Sunday Mba next came close, with build-up play by Ideye Brown, but his stinging effort was edged out by Victor Valdes.

Spain doubled their advantage on the hour mark, when substitute Fernando Torres capitalised on some poor defending to head home two minutes after coming onto the pitch.

Ahmed Musa set up substitute Muhammad Gambo, who somehow managed to hit wide with only the keeper to beat, after his first touch let him down badly.

Alba sealed the win with two minutes to go, rounding Vincent Enyeama after a long pass from David Silva.

Stephen Keshi team will leave Brazil with a solitary win over Tahiti, finishing third in Group B behind Uruguay.

Spain top Group B with nine points, and face Itay in a rematch of last year’s Euro 2012 Final in the semi-final on Thursday.

I would also like to point out a lot of forumites are complaining about Ideye Brown and Anthony Ujah. Was it not on KON that we shouting Keshi should invite these players? Now some of you are pretending to not know who they are, saying you don't know where Keshi found them.

Haha I am sure if Keshi invites players like Obinna, Martins, Obasi the same players you are shouting for now and they don't deliver, you will deny knowing them as well. It happened with Odemwingie in the match against Guinea. Before that match you guys were calling Siasia a stubborn goat for not inviting Odemwingie. He played rubbish and you guys denied calling for him.

Na wa o! Once Naija fans see trouble dem go deny or run quick quick.

A good coach should know how to select players. Keshi doesn't know how to select players. Musa, Ideye, Akpala should no longer get a call up to play for the Super Eagles.

Anyway, Nigeria tried and kudos to them for putting up a fight. It's time to return to the drawing board and comeback stronger. The potential is there, it is now up to Keshi to bring out the best potential.

Before the match I knew very well Niaja cannot win but All these players are good, problem is that Keshi is NOT a tactician, he lacks ideas. He won that Afcon with raw talents but he cannot play high profile matches. Why must he always stick to a particular pattern that is not helping ? This team has di same problem even from the Afcon tournament.

@Kola-USA, NaijaBros, Anonymous – Steve and Live4eagles...
You guys need to get real... It's time for reality check. All the curses and venom that you guys are raining and pouring just because people expressed their personal opinions go back to you in multiple folds.

@Keshi.. Respect begets respect.. We need to respect ourselves first, by doing the right thing.. I do not hate you, but the truth must be told. You are in Eagles to do business. You do not have what it takes to coach Nigeria. Nigeria 's Super Eagles is just too big for you.. Period.

same pattern all the time, same changes all the time, Mba - Ogu, Akplala -Ujah, etc. always same pattern. No attacking ideas just relying on individual play and luck ! im sure he put Mba today to see if di boy will score as today is sunday ! what a funny coach!!!!!

Enyeama, Musa , Ideye should leave SE, they can not perform. SE doesn! t have strikers. We need reasonable finishers like Victor Moses, E. Emenike, Osaze and co. Keshi, it is time to give us real SE. With the above mentioned Names we are going nowhere. Enyeama is a basket, he is not a serious keeper, he needs to be changed. But I still appreciate your good work. Carry go !

Keshi and other coaches in this team shd please gooooooooooooooooooooooooo. We need fresh ones. Sunday Olise shd be given a chance after World Cup Qualifiers, Peter Rufai shd be our new Keepers Trainer. Yobo, Martins or Nsofor , Osaze, Rabiu Ibrahim, Haruna Lukman shd step in now. Keshi have disgraced himself in this tournament. His time is up. Osaze and others will be laughing by now. God bless Nigeria!!

Everyone should see this as a friendly and considering that this same spain beat Italy 4-0 in the FINALS last summer is showing of the way we played.
Anyone who expected better from the eagles than they gave today are not realistic.
THey played well and if not for poor finishing, the scoreline would have been better.

what way forward?

Well no need to call for Keshi to be fired (his team played one bad game and won and played 2 good games and lost mostly due to poor finishing and Ambrose.

We need to hope he gets back to his champions league Vs Barca level or find a replacement.
Omerou is good and so is Echiejile
Mikel should be allowed to keep doing what he does we need to put someone to help him in the middle.
Our LOCAL players where not really STAR-STRUCK as i expected.
SO mikel and Mba in the middle are not too bad. Joel obi and Onazi should be in the middle talk.
Musa on the wing using his speed to cause trouble but he needs to work on his crossing.

We need a finisher. Find one somewhere. ANYWHERE, if he is U-20 fine, If he is old (Martins) fine, but we need a deadly finisher to partner with Emenike and have Moses on the other wing opposite Musa. That kind of speed on the wings and a deadly finisher with Mikel in the middle, well we will be hard to beat.

What do you think?

But I believe Nigeria played well in this tournament. They deserved better than they got.
