Santos, Chiefs share spoils

Santos and Kaizer Chiefs played to a goalless draw in their Absa Premiership fixture at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday evening.

Koena Mathopa was the first player to go into referee Daniel Bennett’s book when he caught Itumeleng Khune in the chest with a poor challenge in the fourth minute.

Mabhuti Khenyeza should have done better in the 15th minute when he shot wide from inside the area after Santos failed to clear a corner.

Chiefs were then denied a clear penalty in the 20th minute when Santos keeper Lee Langeveldt fouled Khenyeza inside the area, but referee Bennett waved for play to continue.

The hosts immediately launched a counter-attack, which culminated in winger Erwin Isaacs shooting high over the crossbar from just inside the area.

Koena Mathopa should have handed the People’s Team the lead in the 31st minute when he headed the ball over the onrushing Khune, but the ball bounced just wide of goal.

Chiefs struggled with the windy conditions and with Santos’ pace and they should have gone behind in the 39th minute when Romano Scott beat the offside trap, and with just Khune to beat, the striker sent his attempted lob straight into the arms of the Amakhosi keeper.

A minute later Isaacs beat then offside trap before setting up Scott, but again the diminutive striker sent his effort straight at Khune.

The match remained goalless at the break.

The hosts continued in the same vein in the second half and should have gone ahead four minutes after the restart when Mathopa ran clear on goal, but the striker shot straight at Khune.

Santos were denied a definite penalty in the 56th minute when Isaacs was brought down inside the area, but again Bennett failed to award a spot-kick.

Mathopa again wasted a glorious chance in the 70th minute when he was played clear by a superb cross-field ball by Thando Mngomeni, but again he shot straight at the Chiefs keeper.

Both sides rang the changes and this seemed to break the momentum of Santos, but Chiefs looked out of sorts and never threatened the Santos goal after that.

The Chiefs coach should win an Oscar for his perfomances and looney behaviour on the sidelines. After the game he complained about the officiating when Chiefs were not awarded a penalty. He probably is suffering from memory loss as we sat in the same stadium when Santos were robbed of a legitimate penalty in a cup game which Chiefs later went to win after Arthur Zwane deliberately used his hand to clear Otieno's header of the goal line. Our coaches and their respective teams must start taking responsibility for poor peformances and results. We agree that our referees are sometimes not up to standard but they are not scapegoats for some shocking play by the players who week in and week out fail to give the paying fans their money's worth!! Can our local teams just for once do what the money is pumped into our soccer for , deliver the goods on the pitch and stop moaning and griping!!!!!!!!!!

The coach should swallow his pride and bring back Gert.Chiefs is fighting for top8 position instead of league honours. If they dont want to sign the playmaker pls mr coach pls bring back Gert caz Chiefs now is just another team.Lastly remember what brought the depature of Ertugral in his first spell, the same results which is draws.

Ousting Middendorp was like getting the snake out of the house. We would settle for anyone to save us from Mazinyo. But alas! Muhsin is no different. There is simply no positive play from the team. No chances are created, no wonder goals are not scored. You have to be very long suffering to watch Chiefs huff and puff in the hope that something will happen. It's not about the lack of playmeker or striker. Negative football have affected players confidence. Obua and Khenyeza were giving away possession like anything y'day.

Chiefs should have done better, and my opinion is dat we were not suppose to let go of Kosta Papic he is a good coach, it's a pity dat we didn't give him a chance and he is better than Mushin.

I fail 2 undstand why Muhsin is angry when he knows that the problems lies with him. He chased away good players at the expense of average players. He could take advice, that coz he is a coach. He is not taking chiefs anywhere. There is no penetration from the wings. There is no cohesion from the midfield such that the link between the defence and the strikers is very poor. Chiefs loses possesion too easily. This has been evident since the begginning of the league. I think the technical staff should have retified this. You cant start the league with three strikers. The motion of ~ we dont` need a playmaker` is eating up Chiefs. Mr Motaung pliz help b4 it is too late.
