CAF Champions League match report: Zamalek 2 Orlando Pirates 1

Posted: 1 September 2013 Time: 17:50

Orlando Pirates lost 2-1 to Zamalek in the CAF Champions League in El Gouna on Sunday.

A win would have sent Pirates through to the semi-finals, but now they will have to wait until the next round of fixtures to be sure of qualification.

Zamalek came out all guns blazing, and put Pirates under pressure from the first minute of the match.

The Egyptians went 1-0 up on six minutes, when Lucky Lekgwathi had fouled Shikabala in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot.

Eid Abdel Malek stepped up to take the spot-kick and sent Senzo Meyiwa the wrong way to put the hosts ahead.

Bacela grabbed the equaliser just after the half-hour mark, after surging up the left wing, turning his defender and beating goalkeeper Abdul-Wahed Al-Sayed with a low shot.

Four minutes from half-time Bacela should have made it 2-1 to Bucs, but his shot was saved by Al-Sayed.

Early in the second half Meyiwa did well to punch a cross away and keep the score at 1-1, but a few minutes later he misread a corner-kick, and the ball reached an unmarked Salah Soliman at the far post, who headed home to give the hosts the lead again.

Meyiwa did well again on the hour mark, denying Ahmed Gaafar in a one-on-one situation, and a few minutes later he deflected a shot from Ahmed Gaafar.

Andile Jali was cautioned in the 65 minute, and will miss Bucs’ next CAF match.

12 minutes from time Zamalek had a penalty shout denied, after the ball hit Rooi Mahamutsa on the arm in the box.

Ndumiso Mabena, who was brought on for Bacela with 10 minutes to go, could have levelled the scores three minutes before full time, but Hamada Tolba got himself in the way of his shot.

The win is Zamalek’s first in the Champions League group stages.

Pirates remain top of Group B, equal on seven points with Al-Ahly, but ahead on a goal difference of +5 to Ahly’s -1.

AC Leopards and Zamalek are third and fourth, respectively, with four points each.

Orlando Pirates next travel to AC Leopards on September 15, while Al-Ahly will host Zamalek on September 22.

When we said they ejaculating early and not satisfying this woman, they loosened the air with their mouths as always! Next journey to DRC and anada loss, meaning Al Ahly will beat them here in SA and Leopards will beat Zamalek, so Leopards and Al Ahly are through! This Bucs team is just a shadow waiting to fade!

Gold is the only high standard!!!

The result isn't a train smash.

The conditions were atrocious and the guys really pitched up.

Even the Lion King himself didn't look too comfortable. He played as if he was injured which indicates the bearing the heat had on the game.

It is only in the northern cape where you can really expect such weather conditions, but other than that, in our country we're not used to such.

I can't fault the team although our defence was poor in conceding those goals. We shot ourselves on the foot with that kinds defending.

Harsh penalty and harsh headline by kickoff.
SA media is fully against our beloved team.
We shall prevail against all odds.
AJ15 is simple the best!
Bacela what a goal!
RDS good substitutions

You a dubious penalty to beat mighty Bucs in your own backyard.
Am happy with the performance of my team.
Up the Bucs!

I made it clear on this blog only Andile Jali can rise above all odds in egypt yet RDS didnt start the game with Jali,
how could a coach put a player that is far better than any other player in SA in the midfielder, on the bench n trust the unexperience vierra in such a high tempo game, any way we are still on top n only a win at orlando against Al Ahly will serve us to the semis believe me on not RDS will never put him on the bench again

Not the best of games from my Dream Team.... The commitment & energy levels were not right... Coach panicked, unnecessarily figited with the system when it was coming right towards the later stages of the first half... tried to mitigate realizing the silliness of putting Jali on for Tlou then redundantly putting in Juju for Masalesa... Amateurish behavior....

Well... we know have to do it in Congo... I don't want a final before the final with Ahly....
