Match report: Bloemfontein Celtic crush Milano United in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 24 February 2013 Time: 17:28

Bloemfontein Celtic’s experience got the better of Milano United as they fought back from a goal down to eliminate the Cape club from the Nedbank Cup with a 4-1 win on Sunday.

The tournament has already seen some upsets, including Orlando Pirates being eliminated by third tier side Mahuti FET College, and Clinton Larsen was not taking any chances, fielding a strong line-up against a Milano United side that is coached by his former Manning Rangers teammate Theo Hempe.

Despite only gaining promotion to the National First Division this season, Milano were out prove that it was no fluke that they made it to the final 32 of the Nedbank Cup, and they did so in stellar fashion when Alcardo van Graan made it 1-0 inside the first five minutes.

Van Graan clipped the ball out from Patrick Tignyemb’s hands, rounded the keeper and slotted it into the back of the net.

Ruzaigh Gamildien, who is a product of the Milano United youth academy, was taking no prisoners against his former club and was a threatening presence, forcing a string of corners.

Midway through the hal the referee allowed for a five minute water break for both sides in order to cope with the scorching heat.

On the half an hour mark, Thabo Nthethe had a header blocked by Richard Webber’s body on the goalline.

Then the Black and Yellow hard work was wiped out, and they found themselves trailing after two goals in four minutes.

First, Chad Robertson turned the ball into the back of his own net, after he failed to clear a cross by Auguston Leonard in the 36th minute.

Soon after, Nthethe headed home to give Celtic the advantage.

In the second half, Efraim Tjinhonge pulled off a great save to deny Lyle Lakay from distance.

Then in the 70th minute Tignyemb spilled Van Graan’s shot at goal, but out of the three Milano players in the box, none managed to capitalise on the opportunity, allowing for the Cameroonian to gather again.

Keenin Lesch was brought on to add some experience for Milano, but there was little he could do to prevent Celtic from making it 3-1.

Lakay finally got the goal he deserved, when he struck a shot from distance which skipped through Tjinhonge’s legs midway through the second 45.

Lennox Bacela then put the icing on the cake as he came on and headed in a stopped time goal to send Celtic through to the final 16.

Bloemfontein Celtic: Tignyemb, Leonard, Mzava, Nthethe, Mahoa, Mogorosi (Nyanda 80), Duiker, Manzini (Bacela 75), Lentjies (Arwuah 63), Gamildien, Lakay.

Milano United: Tjinhonge, Posholi, Hempe, Nazier, Robertson, Jacobs, Webber (Brenner 77), Motha (Lesch 71), Stoffels, Van Graan, Saal (Stellenboom 46)
