Match report: Vasco da Gama beat Mbombela United 4-1 in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 24 February 2013 Time: 17:58

First Division Vasco da Gama thumped amateur side Mbombela United to go through to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup on Sunday.

United were keen to show they would be no pushovers, and dangerman Charles Mogashwa had a couple of early chances as the hosts dominated possession.

Mogashwa tried a shot from inside the box that almost caught out Gershin Kock, but it went over the crossbar.

Three minutes later, the United man got on the end of a cross from winger Quinton Wallace, but again failed to hit the target.

On 10 minutes George Akpabi put the Cape side ahead, when he chipped the ball over United keeper Sibusiso Masuku.

Then, on 22 minutes, Geofrey Serunkuma sent in a cross which Jonathan Fransman did well to hit home, past an unmoving Masuku.

A few minutes later Mbombela got a goal back, when Mogashwa converted a penalty after Thuso Shuping had been brought down in the box.

Mbombela came charging out of the blocks in the second half, with Inky Masuku almost putting his side on level terms.

But with an hour to go Fransman extended Vasco’s lead, when he hit home the rebound after a shot by George Akpabio.

The Second Division side seemed to unravel at this point, 3-1 down, and Vasco took hold of the match, despite still not commanding possession, and Nathan Gertse went on a fantastic solo run, dribbling through three players and beating the keeper to put the result beyond doubt.
