SuperSport United beat Moroka Swallows on penalties

Posted: 23 February 2013 Time: 20:39

SuperSport United are through to the next round of the Nedbank Cup after a penalty shootout victory against Moroka Swallows on Saturday evening.

After a goalless 120 minutes, the match went into a shoot-out where Matsatsantsa won 5-3, with Roger de Costa missing the only penalty.

United were seeking revenge after losing to Swallows in the final of this season’s MTN8 competition.

Simba Sithole nearly opened the scoring for SuperSport on the half-hour mark thanks to quick thinking from keeper Ronwen Williams, but he couldn’t find the back of the net.

Siyabonga Nomvete nearly opened the scoring for the Dube Birds just after the break, breaking through the defence before a good tackle from Grant Kekana denied the veteran striker.

Matsatsantsa nearly opened the scoring in the 58th minute through Sithole. He latched onto a ball in the box and the striker’s shot looked bound for the back of the net, but instead it came back off the post.

Etafia did brilliantly to deny Nkoana from opening the score in 76th minute, palming the ball onto the post from point-blank range to keep the score level.

Leratu Chabangu had a chance to seal the game for Swallows in the 88th minute, losing his marker before heading wide.

In the fifth minute of extra-time a free-kick from the right flank found an unmarked Isaacs in the box, but the defender couldn’t steer the ball past Williams.

Bradley Grobler missed a great chance a minute later, dancing past a few defenders but the missing his shot.

The match went into penalties, where De Costa missed the only kick to give SuperSport the win.
