Togo beat Tunisia to reach AFCON 2013 quarterfinals

Posted: 30 January 2013 Time: 21:32

Tunisia missed a late penalty and had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Togo – a result which secured the west Africans a first-ever spot in the Nations Cup.

Togo had taken the lead through Serge Gapke and though Khaled Mouelhi levelled from the spot, his missed another penalty which ultimately proved decisive.

From a South African point of view, it was also a game to forget for referee Daniel Bennett, who got a number of decisions wrong and even booked the wrong player.

Togo started well and twice came close through Gakpe and Emmanuel Adebayor. Shortly afterwards though, the two players combined as the latter’s pass allowed the former to run through and slot past the goalkeeper.

A few more chances came and went before Tunisia were awarded a penalty when Walid Hichri was adjudged to have been fouled by Dare Nibombe, allowing Mouelhi to level the scores.

Togo were close to the lead again on 70 minutes when Adebayor rattled the woodwork.

Step up referee Bennett. Having turned down a penalty appeal by Togo, he then awarded a dubious one to Tunisia. Tempers flared and three yellow cards were issued, but ultimately justice was done as Mouehli missed his spot-kick.

Togo keeper Kossi Agassa then pulled off an exceptional save with his feet in injury time to send his side into the quarterfinals.

I thought the penalty he awarded to tunisians was harsh but it was a referee decision, but when he failed to award togolese a penalty after adebayor was pushed by a defender when trying to control the ball with his head in the eighteen area then i realised that this referee is impartial. Let alone a numerous dubious decisions he made..

We saw PSL refereeng at its best. What is wrong with our referees? Is it because Bennet was once assaulted in Tunisia? Jerome Damone was also banned in Cameroon. What can we expect from refs
promoted by Nematandani??

@TREBLE CHAMP KING; the rubbish you've just posted deserves no dignity, but since you have posted let me correct you by saying that this Bennet was your hero when he broke into the scene and gave Chiefs two red cards against Cosmos back then, and continued to satisfy the forces of Irvin Khoza and the B Team of Veli Mahlangu, Taunyane Jomo Sono, Thomas Kwenaite etc. Today you turn around and align him to Chiefs...you are such a confused individual who seeks absolution for nothing, yet you know very well pirats' escapades and how they "won" the Champions league.
