Impressive Bafana down Angola in 2013 AFCON

Posted: 23 January 2013 Time: 17:56

South Africa finally produced a performance worth celebrating as they beat Angola 2-0 in Durban in their second match of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

After the dismal effort against Cape Verde, Bafana Bafana looked a different side as goals from Siyabonga Sangweni and Lehlohonolo Majoro secured the vital three points.

The attacking line-up selected by Gordon Igesund paid dividends as the hosts – bar an early shot from Mateus which Itumeleng Khune tipped round the post – dominated the first half.

And after a hopeful early effort from Katlego Mphela, the Bafana's first real chance fell to an unmarked Sangweni, who completely missed Thuso Phala’s curling free-kick into the area.

Dean Furman was proving a handful for the Angolans with his ball-winning abilities, and one such tackle saw him get up immediately and try and chip goalkeeper Lama, but the effort landed on the roof of the net.

Tokelo Rantie was also looking sharp and his partnership with Mphela yielded a few half-chances, but none that troubled Lama.

However, on 30 minutes the keeper did have a job to do – to pick the ball out the back of the net.

Bernard Parker’s free-kick was not cleared by the Angolan defence, allowing Sangweni to sneak round the back and volley across the face of goal and into the back of the net.

It was no more than Bafana deserved for some enterprising play which was lacking against Cape Verde, though Mateus had a chance late in the half when the ball dropped to him in the box, but his shot was rushed and way over.

Angola came out with more fire in the second half and almost levelled six minutes in when the impressive Mateus found Guilherme Afonso, whose snap-shot looked to be going in before Khune got down well to save.

Three minutes later and Furman was inches away from his first ever international goal, but for a fine tip around the post by Lama.

However, the keeper had no answer on 62 minutes as Bafana scored their second goal. Substitute Majoro, with his first touch of the game, ran onto a long ball from Reneilwe Letsholonyane and beat one defender before slotting through the goalie’s legs.

Mateus hit a shot straight at Khune shortly afterwards, but it was Bafana who came closest to adding to their tally when Mphela’s cross found Majoro’s, whose snap-shot went narrowly wide.

Angola came into the game more in the final 10 minutes but, a Manucho header which Khune saved aside, were unable to really trouble the Bafana backline.

In fact, Majoro came close to adding to a third in injury-time when he ran onto a long-ball and chipped the goalie, but the ball went well wide when he should have done much better.

I hate what Sangweni is doing.

He is busy saving this Cowch's job. Gordon does not deserved to saved here. I want new coach.

I don't think I will forgive Sangweni for scoring a beautiful volley with his weaker foot.... Something Shabba can't even do in his dream.

Curse Neil Tovey for boosting this team's chances of winning this game with his comments that may have placed Shabba on the bench. Nx

Hahahaha! It took a Buccaneer all the way from defence to do what the John Terrys of this world do best; score! uNsimbi ubonile ukuthi lezinkomo from the zoo have NO CHANCE of scoring and took matters into his own hands.

Zebra boys have successfuly failed to score. We did say tap-ins will be hard to come by in Afcon. Kufuneka amadoda lana; men like Nsimbi!

"Drop Sangweni" they said. Kuphi Khona?

Angola will still win though!

Rantie and Majoro should be our strikers, Mphela is a passenger up front.
