Mamelodi Sundowns beat University of Pretoria 1-0

Posted: 23 October 2012 Time: 21:24

Mamelodi Sundowns relieved some of the pressure on coach Johan Neeskens with a 1-0 Telkom Knockout Cup win against University of Pretoria on Tuesday evening.

Sundowns dominated possession in the first half, but were unable to really stretch the visitors’ defence and create scoring chances from open play. However, Teko Modise twice threatened from free-kicks.

His first was well palmed away by Tuks goalkeeper Washington Arubi on 22 minutes, while the second rattled the crossbar in the 39th. Those were the only notable attacking moments of the first half from either team.

The Brazilians’ attack clicked into a higher gear in the third minute of the second half. Punch Masenamela picked out Elias Pelembe on the right wing, who beat his marker before providing a perfect low pass which was swept emphatically into the back of the net by Laffor.

Sundowns goalkeeper Dennis Onyango was a spectator in the first half, but he saw more action in the second, keeping out an angled drive from Mame Niang before twice having to punch away an awkward aerial ball in the 74th minute as Tuks began to put more pressure on the hosts’ defence.

Substitute Nyasha Mushekwi had a golden chance to wrap up the game ten minutes before time when he pinched the ball off Tebogo Monyai and headed toward goal, but the defender got back to make a risky challenge and did just enough to deny the striker.

Goalkeeper Arubi produced two excellent saves to keep the score down to 1-0 in the dying minutes, keeping out goal-bound efforts from Mushekwi and Hlompho Kekana as Sundowns searched for a killer second goal.

The kind of counter-attacking-park-the-bus-football played by Chiefs that Tuks was playing today has no place in the PSL - they deserve to lose...

Teko was imperious... good game for him...

It is a relieve that someone would live another day. Sundowns are just a bunch of people playing soccer, relying mostly on individual skills rather than the cohesion of the team. It is good that they have won. This should serve as a starting point to fight.
UP THE BUCS!

Since he lost R400 000 (as reported by mail & gurdian), he seems to have lost interest in soccer. But, maybe the situation is a bit tense with the possibility of the coach losing his job, they seem not to break away such mentality. But, then what is happening to the fans out there? I presume even if they say, tickets are R5 rands, people would still not come. Maybe we need to sober up and realise soccer is not a number spot in South Africa.
Shame.

Khosi lami the confidence is very low , he's one of the talented foreign players in our country. I believe he's adding value to our PSL but there's been rumours of misunderstanding between him and the coach.

However we know what he's capable of ....very talented player. These are the kinds of foreign players we need in our league, not these avarage players like aboMsocoya, Tafera Fikru, Otorogu,Mwape

I watched only the first 60 minutes of the game because right after that I started watching the Champions league and immediately I could understand why this game was not broadcasted on HD just like Pirates games.

Rodgers is a good striker and his work rate is fantastic. He holds the ball well and nows what to do with possession. His diagonal runs are also great to watch. But his finishing tonight was atrocious. There was no reason to boo the player off. Gosh. RVP missed a hoal that was easier to score than to miss over the weekend against Stoke. You didn't hear Man United booing him away. We understand that you haven't won in a long time but relax madawana. Otherwise good over all performance. Tuks cannot beat big clubs. They only beat the self-proclaimed big ones. Good luck in your next games madawana.

The most dangerous a player on the field is a confident player, that's what Pelembe needs right now.
These are the times where you need a decent coach,father-figure,motivator, someone who'll instill that positive attitude and confidence to the players.

Not the rubbish coaches we had in Naturena abo Mushin Ertugral nabo V V......I can still taste bitterness in my mouth when I think of those coaches
