Meyiwa stars in Derby draw

PSL match report: Kaizer Chiefs draw with Orlando Pirates in Soweto Derby

Posted: 9 March 2013 Time: 05:41 pm

Senzo Meyiwa won man of the match as Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates drew in the Soweto Derby on Saturday.

The match got off to a predictably scrappy start, with both teams taking a while to settle.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane was the first with a chance on goal, a long-range effort in the ninth minute that went well wide.

Both coaches were on their feet in the first 20 minutes, in an attempt to get their teams to calm the pace of the game down.

On 15 minutes Daine Klate took a free-kick from outside the box, which made it over the wall, but was easily gathered by Itumeleng Khune.

Bucs lost Thulasizwe Mbuyane on 20 minutes, after he injured his thigh in a tackle and was replaced by Tlou Segolela.

Siyabonga Sangweni had a chance on 23 minutes, after Segolela floated a corner in, but his strong headed effort at the back post went wide.

Shortly after, Segolela had a chance of his own, when he beat his man on a mazy cross-goal run, but he pushed his shot just wide.

Kingston Nkhatha was stretchered off the pitch on 26 minutes with a knock after a clash with Sangweni. ‘Shabba’ took the free-kick, but it was punched away by Senzo Meyiwa. Chiefs kept it in play, but could not work the ball into a dangerous area, and it was cleared.

Shortly after that Siboniso Gaxa had a foray into the area, but he was well covered by the Pirates defence, and Thabo Matlaba and Senzo Meyiwa combined to disposses him.

Tshabalala was next with a chance, and after running in on the wing he had a close-range shot, under pressure from Matlaba, but he used his left foot and it was an awkward effort, straight at Meyiwa at the near post.

The chance of the half came from Matlaba, when five minutes before half-time he sent a dipping, long-range thunderbolt through on goal, but it was just over the bar – much to Khune’s relief.

Klate and Matlaba had half-chances on goal after that, as Pirates came into the match.

Already on a yellow, Happy Jele was lucky not to be sent off just before half-time, after a late challenge on Bernard Parker.

Tshabalala sent in the resulting free-kick, a great delivery that found the head of Morgan Gould; it was a powerful attempt, but wide.

Early in the second half, Klate and Ndumiso Mabena combined in front of goal, but after a promising one-two Mabena sent the ball back to Klate, and it was over his head, the oportunity lost.

Amakhosi had a great chance on the hour mark, when Sthembiso Ngcobo cut the ball back on the edge of the area, looking for Parker, but the ball fell to Tshabalala, who pumped a shot into the box. Meyiwa made a fantastic acrobatic save high to his left, palming the ball out wide. Ngcobo gathered and had a second attempt, but blazed it over the bar.

And Chiefs had another chance soon after, when the ball was launched into the box and Meyiwa failed to gather, dropping the ball after a clash with a Chiefs player. After a desperate goalmouth scramble the ball was cleared off the line by Klate.

Pirates had a slurry of chances after that. First, a free-kick was sent in by Segolela, curving around to Khune's far post. Khune could not hold onto it, and in the resulting scramble Bucs came close to finding the net, but the ball went out for a corner.

Bucs then had three corners in succession, with Collins Mbesuma, Klate and Oupa Manyisa all trying their luck, but the ball was finally cleared.

With two minutes to go, Willard Katsande sent the ball over the bar from a corner, after going up for the ball with Meyiwa and winning the header.

Chiefs came into the game in the final few minutes – Meyiwa pulled off a great save from a stinging shot from range – but Amakhosi could not convert their attacks into goals and the match ended 0-0.

Oh Major! Why.....just why did you have to miss such a vital game. Although I didn't watch the game, but I followed it and I was expecting Chiefs to grab all 3 points.......maybe next time.

What a way of shutting us all, the game was dull. Senzo, Shabba, Manyisa & Mapholoba were impressive. Yeye needs to be benched for our next 3 games, we have depth mos. "My players must grow, they dont learn you know. " Lucky Lekgwathi

oh well atleast we didn't lose all 3 points. Jason meyiwa won man of the match becos ngcobo doesnt pick a spot before he shoots. The only good save he made was when he intercepted Josta's cross.shame on pap & custard FC for their disgusting football . They were giving balls away the same way a #### gives away her assetts and now all those countries who watched the derby are laughing at our PSL.secowlela is a horrible footballer. And shame on chiefs for not taking full advantage ,parker should've ran at Nappy Jelly the minute he got that yellow card and ensure he got another booking. Now the only obstacles we have are maritzburg, platinum and suppersport.

A passive gigantic defense is not countered by throwing another giant in the form of Mbesuma nor Chinyama.... latter part of 1st half displayed the kind of mobility required to unsettle a static 7 men defence... there's nothing wrong in using a pseudo no.9, Spain has taught us how that is done...
