Mario Booysen scored to give the visitors the lead, but an Asive Langwe goal followed by a winner by Ryan Chapman three minutes from saw the Clever Boys prevail at the Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday night.
Wits had their first chance of the match inside the tenth minute. Sibusiso Vilakazi’s volley on the edge of the box on the right flank narrowly went wide of the target as it hit the side net with Maritzburg keeper Shu-Aib Walters well beaten.
Two minutes later Ryan Chapman wasted what at that point should have been the match’s opening goal when he was presented with a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper but shot wide.
Wits were in control of the match, but were brought down to earth when they conceded in the 14th minute. Dillon Sheppard sent in an in-swinging left-footed corner kick cross which was headed home at the near post by Booysen.
The Clever Boys found the all-important equaliser in the 38th minute. Pattison picked out Mzikayise Mashaba on the left wing and he sent in a cross to the far post which Langwe headed home to make it 1-1.
Faty had another chance to score when in the 51st minute his shot made the ball collide with the post with Walters certainly beaten. Three minutes later Walters was again tested when Pattison’s dipping shot from 30-yards agonisingly went over.
In the 87th minute Chapman scored the winner. He picked up the ball just outside the box, turned and looked up before hitting a screamer of a shot that flew into the corner of the net.
