Dove Wome scores as Free State Stars beat Maritzburg United

Posted: 20 February 2013 Time: 20:14

A solitary goal from Dove Wome handed Free State Stars a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was a slow start form the Ea Lla Koto as they struggled to find their rhythm early on, allowing Maritzburg the first shot on goal in the fifth minute, but Dillion Sheppard’s 30-yard effort went wide of the goal.

Stars were forced into long-range efforts, with Daniel Cardosa and Noah Chivuta both coming close, before the unmarked Sadat Ouro-Akoriko headed a golden chance wide.

Shu-Aib Walters then produced a fantastic save in the 36th minute, flinging himself across goal to tip Danny Venter’s 25-yard shot around the post.

Stars continued to attack in the second half and were unlucky not to take the lead in the 51st minute. Venter was in the thick of the action again as he shot from the edge of the box, but Walters produced a great save to deny him.

Maritzburg hardly threatened and it was just reward, five minutes from time, when Stars netted the winner through Wome’s well-struck shot.

Halalaaaaaaaaaa Ea Lla Koto. Well done and 3 points in the bag. This Free State Stars Team together with Plat Stars are teams to watch. They play attractive attacking football with a lot of pace, home and away. Pity they are hardly televised. One can only hope that Teams in the PSL get the same treatment and broadcasting.

Well done to FSS
