Match report: Ajax Cape Town draw 2-2 with Bloemfontein Celtic

Posted: 19 February 2013 Time: 21:31

Ajax Cape Town lost their lead, then went behind, but came back for a draw against Bloemfontein Celtic on Tuesday, securing what could be a crucial point in their battle against relegation.

In what was a very lacklustre first half, there was a first minute chance for Khama Billiat, whose shot was well saved by Patrick Tingyemb.

Ajax just about shaded possession and made more forays into their opponent’s half, but for the most part could not find a way to create any chances, with the game offering the spectators very little entertainment.

Four minutes before the break there was a decent chance for the Urban Warriors when Nazier Allie crossed for Toriq Losper, but his first time shot was ballooned over the bar.

But the goal finally did come, just a minute before the break the deadlock was finally broken when Mabuthi Khenyeza got the slightest touch to glance Billiat’s header into the net.

Khenyeza then wasted the chance to double Ajax’s lead when he blasted wide from the penalty spot four minutes after the break, following Thabo Nthethe’s hand-ball in the area.

The game remained tight for the next 15 minutes as neither side managed to create much but as the match moved into the final 20 minutes Phunya Sele Sele began to look far more threatening going forwarrd.

Their efforts paid dividends with 15 minutes to go as Lerato Manzini stole into the box to slot home Ruzaigh Gamildien’s header across the face of the goal.

Gamildien then turned to scorer when he took advantage of Sean Roberts’ poor clearance to slam the ball into the net from 12 yards out, and it was 2-1 to the visiting team after 79 minutes.

But Celtic were only ahead for three minutes as Ajax’s Brazilian striker Wanderson came off the bench to score an excellent individual effort, beating several defenders before smashing the ball into the far corner of the net.

The title of this article is supposed to say Ajax fight back against Celtic, since they were the last ones to score an equaliser.

I fear for Ajax. Once title contenders now relegation candidates and judging by how AmaZulu and Chippa is playing currently, it looks like Ajax is going straight down without even the possibility of getting a relegation/promotion berth, how the mighty have fallen. BT#1
