AmaZulu moved off the bottom of the League standings after a 1-1 draw against SuperSport United at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday night.
Chances were few and far between, but the visitors almost capitalised from a defensive mistake in the eighth minute when Carlington Nyadombo lost possession inside his penalty area, but Tapuwa Kapini pulled off a double save to deny both Sameegh Doutie and Simba Sithole.
Usuthu then had their own chances at the other end with Njabulo Manqana sending his free-kick over the crossbar in the 17th minute, while Ayanda Dlamini had a penalty shout waved away two minutes later.
Most of the play was concentrated in the midfield as SuperSport played a high pressing game, but Thkozani Mshengu did force Ronwen Williams to punch away a cross with bodies lurking inside the six-yard box.
The second half saw more in the way of goalmouth action, but Thamsanqa Teyise sent his free-kick crashing against the upright in the 52nd minute, before Bradley Grobler headed just wide at the other end a minute later.
Kapini came to his side’s rescue again in the 56th minute, coming off his line to deny Sithole a clear view of goal, before parrying a stinger from Franklin Cale a minute later to keep his side in the game.
Goodman Dlamini should have done better in the 61st minute when a cross from Ayanda Dlamini found him unmarked just inside the box, but somehow he sent his shot wide of the post, while Sithole drew another decent stop from Kapini a minute later.
Cale came close to stealing maximum points for his side in the 87th minute from a dead-ball situation, but his thunderous free-kick cannoned off the crossbar.
