Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs battled hard on Tuesday evening, but could only produce a goalless draw at Loftus Stadium as League football returned after a two-month hiatus for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Sundowns were in the ascendency early in the match and had an opportunity to open the scoring in the sixth minute, but were let down by poor finishing when Teko Modise cut in on the left wing, but hit his shot well over.
In the 16th minute Katlego Mphela was allowed acres of space by the Chiefs defence on the edge of the area and let fly with a shot but, like Modise, he could not keep the effort down.
Elevens later Modise had another crack at Chiefs keeper Itumeleng Khune from range, but Bafana Bafana’s first-choice had no problems keeping the shot out.
With the half-time break only seconds away, the Glamour Boys were unfortunate to not take the lead when George Lebese hit a thunderous left-footed shot from the edge of the box which Wayne Sandilands could only parry, but the defence scrambled to clear the ball.
Chiefs could have opened their account on 50 minutes when Lebese provided an excellent cross to Bernard Parker, but the striker fluffed his lines and a great chance was missed.
Ten minutes from time Sundowns were superbly denied all three points by Khune. Downs left-back Tebogo Langerman sent in an inch-perfect cross from the left, but Themba Zwane's pin-point header from six yards out was parried over the bar by Khune.
The point sees Amakhosi stretch their lead in the standings to two points over Orlando Pirates, but the Buccaneers can overtake them should they beat SuperSport United tomorrow evening. Downs remain tenth.
