Orlando Pirates closed the gap on log leaders Kaizer Chiefs to just one point following a comfortable 2-0 over Golden Arrows on Wednesday evening.
A stunner from Daine Klate in the opened the scoring, while a 53rd-minute header by Happy Jele secured the three points.
After a slow start to the match, Pirates were handed a 25th-minute free-kick and it was Klate who took control of the set-piece and curled the balls past a stranded Pavels Steinbos.
Shortly afterwards Ritus Krjauklis did well to clear away a Sifiso Myeni ball in the box, before Senzo Meyiwa confirmed why he received a recent call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad; pulling off an impressive one-handed save off a dangerous cross into the box.
Dillon Sheppard replaced Luyolo Mapolisa at the start of the second period, but it was Pirates who got the next goals when Jele was left unmarked at the back=post to head home Klate’s corner-kick.
Four minutes later in could have been 3-0 when Steinbos and Oupa Manyisa went one-on-one, but it was the shot-stopper who came out on top.
Meyiwa pulled off another great save to ensure Pirates collected all three points and finish the year just one point behind their arch-rivals.
