Stars fight back to down Leopards

Free State Stars beat Black Leopards 2-1

Posted: 15 December 2012 Time: 5:23 pm

A late goal by substitute Thapelo Mkhatshwa gave Free State Stars a 2-1 win against Black Leopards at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Mkhatshwa struck inside the final minute when his first-time effort following an excellent cut-back from the right gave goalkeeper Ayanda Mtshali no chance.

Thabo Mongalo put Black Leopards ahead, but an own-goal from Vincent Xakane brought Stars back into the game.

It took until the 19th minute for the first goal attempt; Dove Wome hit a low drive from distance, but Ayanda Mtshali did well to save low to his right. Wome again got power behind a striker from range but Mtshali did well to save low down.

Twelve minutes into the second half the home side went into the lead when Mongalo, who had replaced the injured Rodney Ragamalela in the first half, finished calmly.

Mongalo received a great through pass by Michael Nkambule and then took a moment to steady himself before firing in a powerful shot that curled away from the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

In the 73rd minute Leopards conceded an equaliser when an off-target shot by Anver Esterhuizen deflected off Xakane’s leg and looped high and over Mtshali for an own-goal.

Then, in the final minute of the game, substitute Thapelo Mkhatshwa hammered home a shot to claim the three points for Ea Lla Koto.
