The home side were reduced to 10 men just past the half-hour mark when Gilbert Mapemba was sent-off for a crude lunge, and Maritzburg made them pay as goals from Cuthbert Malajila, Terrence Mandaza and Frank Sarfo-Gyamfi sealed their win.
Felix Obada scored a consolation against his former side, but it is now no wins in six for The Birds, whose seasons is unravelling as they slip to 10th in the Absa Premiership.
Maritzburg were ahead on 18 minutes when a long ball from defender Mohamed Awal was not dealt with by the defence and Malajila stole in to deflect the ball home.
The Birds hit back through Obada, who was set up by a fine run down the left from Lefa Tsutsulupa, whose low cross provided a simple tap-in chance.
Mapemba was then sent-off as he went in with both feet on Reuben Cloete and from that moment on the home side had their backs to the wall.
It did take until the final five minutes for Maritzburg to seal their win though, with Mandaza putting them ahead as he converted Cloete’s free-kick at the back post.
And Sarfo-Gyamfi ensured the points were headed back to KwaZulu-Natal when he collected a pass from Ryan de Jongh and coolly slotted past Greg Etafia.

And whilst their coach is clueless(been riding on Gordon's set-up), they have what I believe is the worst Goalkeeper in the whole PSL. This Etafia is just a man at goal-posts, NOT a football goalkeeper.
If Swallows don't get a better substitute for this sham of ''a man at the goal-posts'', they will concede 60+ goals this season.
By the way, I'm the affialiate of the most Glamorous team in PSL.
Gold and Black... Kaizer Chiefs
Nergardze is the hard-man in the midfield, assisted by DVD.
Hendricks and Rudi Isaacs can be your CD pair you're looking for.
Mungomeni needs to play as a right back.
Keep looking for a left back because between Shere and Mjempu, there is no answer to your predicament.
Leave Tsutsulupa on the bench,he can play for 20 or 30 minutes max.
Start with Makhanya and Mabalane on the flanks, using Obada as an impact player.
Leave Chabangu to play behind the striker(Mashego)
Chabangu doesn't have the legs to be tracking back to assist in defense, yet he can always supply your attackers with defense splitting passes.
When you take off Chabangu after 60/70 minutes, put in that Khumalo boy to stabilise your midfield and let DVD play behind the strikers.
There is the solution coach to your problems, use it don't use it that's entirely up to you.
Nergadze is a CDM not a Central Defender
