A hat-trick by Prince Olomu handed Free State Stars a 3-1 victory over Platinum Stars at Goble Park in an Absa Premier League fixture on Sunday afternoon.
Ea Lla Koto took the lead in the fifth minute when Olomu struck with a low shot following a corner by Jimmy Kauleza.
Sifiso Vilakazi went close a minute later, but his curling effort was saved by visiting keeper Tapuwa Kapini.
Platinum Stars threatened in the 12th minute via a long range effort by Phumudzo Manenzhe, whose effort was tipped around the post by Free State Stars’ keeper Kennedy Mweene.
The hosts doubled their lead in the 39th minute when Olomu struck with another low shot from close range.
The score remained 2-0 at the break.
Free State Stars continued in the same vein in the second half, with striker Diyo Sibisi sending an effort just over the bar in the 52nd minute.
Olomu almost completed his hat-trick in the 62nd minute, but his long range shot was tipped around the corner by Kapini.
Platinum Stars’ first chance of the second half came in the 67th minute when substitute Bradley Grobler’s header was saved by Mweene.
This chance seemed to spur the visitors on and Edward Williams was denied a goal by a brilliant save by Mweene in the 84th minute.
Olomu completed his hat-trick two minutes later when he scored from inside the area against the run of play.
Stanley Kgatla pulled one back for Platinum Stars in the 90th minute when he scored with a low shot from the edge of the area, but it was all a little too late for the visitors.
