Posted: 25 September 2012 Time: 21:23

Platinum Stars ended their run of three straight League defeats when they held University of Pretoria to a 0-0 draw in a League match on Tuesday night.

Both teams had opportunities to win the game, but could not score and had to settle for a point.

Siphelele Mthembu fired wide early on for Stars, before Joseph Molangoane put his free-kick wide of the goal.

The visitors continued to have the better of the opening 20 minutes and Botswana international Mogakolodi Ngele forced a fine save from Washington Arubi in the home goal.

AmaTuks had their first real chance when Lionel Mutizwa found himself in acres of space in the box, but instead of picking his spot he rushed his shot and put it wide.

The home side were dealt a blow five minutes before half-time when they had to replace the in-form forward Mpho Maruping though injury, Dumisani Ngwenya taking his place.

Buhle Mkhwanazi drew a good save from Stars keeper Siyabonga Mpontshane as he flashed a shot on goal that the gloveman put wide for a corner.

Mthembu headed over the bar from a Molangoane cross on the hour-mark, while at the other end Mame Niang had a similar chance that he too put over the bar.

Both teams went in search of the win going into the final 20 minutes, with no signs that either side were settling for a draw.

Patrick Malokase might have done better when he headed wide from six yards after a Stars corner, before Niang had another opportunity with his head that he wasted.

Mthembu then had two opportunities in quick succession, a shot that went wide and then a header that was easily saved by Arubi.

AmaTuks will now start planning for an away trip to Cape Town to meet Ajax Cape Town on Saturday, while Dikwena host AmaZulu in a basement battle on the same day at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
