Orlando Pirates beat Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 in an MTN8 quarter-final clash

Posted: 3 August 2012 Time: 22:02

Bloemfontein Celtic were unlucky to be booted out of the MTN8 after a harshly awarded penalty, eight minutes from time, handed them a 1-0 loss to Orlando Pirates on Friday night.

Phunya Sele Sele traded blow for blow with the defending champions in the quarter-final, and many would argue they had the better of the scoring opportunities.

But it was not to be as Andile Jali converted the penalty that sealed Celtic's fate.

The first chance of the game came in the 10th minute when Celtic were awarded an indirect free-kick 12 yards out, after Moeneeb Josephs handled a back-pass from Oupa Manyisa.

Kurt Lentjies touched the ball on for Ruzaigh Gamildien to shoot, but his low drive was cleared off the goalline by the Pirates defence.

Pirates first chance came three minutes later when Benni McCarthy got onto the end of low cross from Ndumiso Mabena, but he fired wide from 12 yards out.

The best chance of the first half came in the final minute, and it took the brilliant acrobatics of Patrick Tignyemb to keep the scores level going into the break.

A Buccaneers counter-attack ended with Mabena volleying the ball goalwards from 22 yards out, but the Celtic keeper produced a great one-handed save to deny him.

The away team started the second half stronger, and came within inches of taking the lead in the 54th minute, when Joel Mogorosi shot narrowly wide from just inside the box.

Four minutes later substitute Lerato Manzini should have scored for Celtic, when he did well to get on the end of a cross, but he squandered his chance and headed the ball straight at Josephs, who made a good save.

The game died out a bit after that, but sprang back into life in the 80th minute when the referee harshly awarded a penalty after Lentjies slipped inside the Celtic box and handled the ball.

Jali made no mistake from the spot to give Pirates the lead and send them into the semi-finals.

Another 1 bites the dust via the BROWN ENVELOPE . When will this stop? Will this ever stop? It's really disheartening for a team to work hard only to be robbed by a person who is supposed to be impartial.....

Hola Mabhakaniya, nw we're just waiting to see who our opponents will be in the semifinals. Coach next match put Phungwayo at left back, did u see what he did when he came on? And honestly the gap that Rantie left still needs to be filled coz Mabena is just not cutting it 4 me

Our soccer in Mzansi is not fair. How can you give a team an unnecessary penalty at the very crucial time where as on the other side you don't see a clear penalty from Gcaba.

Khoza your brown envelop is doing well for your team and yourself.

They don't call you Mr Psl Chairman for nothing.

I Hate Chiefs With A Passion, Pirates have won games fair and square before and i have given credit where it's due. But to loose like that in a 1st official game of the season, come on now. Why Gcaba hand ball was not given, but the ball to hand Lentjies' stood?

They failed to score and Tigynemb worked his butt off and the referee decides the only way to beat this guys is if i hand these guys a penalty? This is just plain criminal.
