Warri Wolves too fierce for Black Leopards in Confederation Cup

Posted: 29 April 2012 Time: 20:24

Black Leopards lost 3-1 to Warri Wolves of Nigeria in a tough CAF Confederation Cup match at Warri Township Stadium on Sunday.

A win would have been a tough ask for Lidoda Duvha, as ahead of this last 16, first leg tie, Wolves had won four from four in the competition so far. In addition, Leopards faced a daunting record: in Nigeria only 3.8% of matches are won away.

The match started slowly, with Leopards looking the better side. Tiyani Mabunda was the busiest up front, creating two scoring chances, while Humphrey Khoza was solid in defence.

Wolves lost top striker Jude Aneke after just 15 minutes following a thigh injury.

The South Africans scored first, with Raymond Monama hitting home with a tap-in, but the Nigerians equalised on 32 minutes, young striker Augustine Amutu scoring with an overhead kick after a set-piece.

The teams went into the break at 1-1, but shortly after half-time the humidity started to prove too much for the visitors, and they conceded two quick-fire goals, a second from Amutu and a third from Gift Atulewa.

Davi Banda had a chance to give the scoreline more respectability late on, but his one-on-one with the goalkeeper came to naught, and the match ended 3-1.

Warri Wolves will face Leopards in Polokwane on May 11-13, where the South Africans will need at least a 2-0 win to go through.

Leopards line-up: Maphaha, Mabusela, Kwena, Tshabalala, Khoza, Banda, Mabunda, Monama (Bobe), Ramagalela (Zulu), Obaje, Madimba (Mapolisa)

Congratulations to BlaCK Leopards FC, it is not easy to win away in Africa, in particular Nigeria, even their domestic league statistics shows that 80% of the home games are won by the Home team, i believe you can do it for South Africa, Orlando Pirates FC did it in 1995/96 and in 2000 beating Nigerian Oppositions BCC Lions in 1995, Shooting Stars in 1996 first round leg, also Mamelodi Sundowns Fc beat Julius Berger Fc on their way to the final against Al Ahly,,,so this ignorant Brothers who always claim that no Nigerian Club ever lost to a South African Club must get thier fact correct,,

Remember, when Leopards was loosing 3-1 in DRC, they had a chance to qualify to last 16 on away goals rule. they score the 2nd goal to qualify on aggregate. Team from Nigeria is likely to lose 3-0 in Giyani.

Leopards, South Africans are behind you. You have a chance to pull it here at home.It always difficult to win away games..especially in our neighboring countries in Africa. Nigerians gleams are beatable, Pirates did it, Sundowns did it.. So you can do it. If not, you would have tried, but we will soldier on, till we come right in conquering Africa.
