Maritzburg United beat Golden Arrows in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 31 March 2012 Time: 17:28

Maritzburg United goalkeeper Shu-aib Walters produced a memorable display to help his team beat Golden Arrows 1-0 in KwaMashu on Saturday afternoon and see them qualify for the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals.

A man down following Kurt Lentjies’ dismissal early in the second half, the visitors eventually made the breakthrough on 73 minutes when Cuthbert Malajila netted the winner.

United had started well and when Lentjies’ free-kick was parried to safety, before Byrone Hendricks had the ball in the back of the net after a bizarre free-kick from his own half had deceived Nkosingiphile Gumede, but it was correctly disallowed as it was an indirect free-kick.

Walters was called into action on 26 minutes to deny Philani Shange, before saving from point-blank range to keep out Collins Mbesuma’s shot.

Lentjies was shown a straight red just after the restart for a reckless challenge on Shange, and Walters was soon called on again, with Mbesuma again the unlucky Arrows player as the goalie saved down low.

On 17 minutes, and somewhat against the run of play, Maritzburg took the lead when Malajila turned home Wayne Matle’s free-kick.

Walters then twice denied substitute Katlego Mashego, before Dillon Sheppard hit the upright in added-on time and Siyabonga Nkosi’s follow-up was spectacularly cleared off the line.

Arrows: Gumede, Mkhize, Bilankulu, Mvalo, Tom, Shange (Mthembu 84'), Khuboni, Nkosi, Sheppard, Van Heerden (Mashego 60'), Mbesuma

Maritzburg: Walters, Hendricks, Booysen, Diouf, Mathuka (Olomu 56'), Obada (Matle 68'), Morton, Madondo, Evans, Lentjies, Malajila (Sibisi 78')

Ernst Middendorp arrived @ Chiefs after back to back league titles & the departure of Collins Mbesuma,Fredericks & the introduction of Yeye into Chiefs which is a difficult time to maintain the preceding standard.

I read some blogger calling him dead ball specialist but for me that's a strong point which many coaches don't possess.

Mind you Middendorp is probably the only current coach in Psl to have coached in one of tough leagues,Bundasliga.

If you respect players in those kinda of leagues then in fairness he deserve it as well.

I don't care how expert people praise Mazinyo but not for Chiefs. Maybe he is good for Makakaniya. Ya he is good for Rats ofcos they don't have coach.

To support my statement which I have stated above,Chiefs have their own coach who is in mission to grap another cup this season like he did in previous ones. So Bugs stop fooling yourselfs get a coach and get life. Stop soaking your tounges in somebody's throphy.Your time came and gone. You are watching Nedbank in the stand.

Some people are so obsessed with just the word 'Orlando Pirates Football Club'. They mention it even where it's not necessary to mention it...I mean tell me what does that imply if it's not obsession of a great sense?

While people do that we continue to be the best team and not by favour but on merit...check stats for this year!
