Supersport have fine win over Pirates

Posted: 14 November 2007 Time: 22:27

Late goals from Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mashego handed Supersport United a 3-1 win over Orlando Pirates in an entertaining Absa Premier League match played at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Siboniso Gaxa had given the hosts an early lead with a spectacular long range effort before former United midfielder Teko Modise equalised with a brilliant free kick in the 79th minute.

Supersport threatened early, with Katlego Mphela rattling goalkeeper Francis Chansa’s post in the fourth minute, and just two minutes later Gaxa beat Bennett Chenene to a loose ball in midfield, surged forward and unleashed a stunning shot that nestled in the top corner of the goal to give the hosts the lead.

Chansa was then forced into a brave save at the feet of Katlego Mphela in the 11th minute after the striker burst free of the Pirates defence with a surging run into the penalty area and Dennis Masina put a snap shot just wide of goal as United seemed able to open up their opponent’s defence at will.

The hosts continued to play with great invention, particularly down the right flank where Masina and Mphela often combined well, but slowly Pirates began to have a greater say in the game, with Teko Modise firing over Andre Arendse’s crossbar just before half time after some incisive build up play by the Buccaneers.

Pirates began the second half well, with Chenene, Excellent Walaza and substitute Tlou Segolela combining to create a couple of worrying moments for Supersport coach Gavin Hunt, but his defence held firm.

Shane Poggenpoel fired a long distance shot just wide of goal on the hour mark, reminding Pirates that the hosts still posed a significant threat going forward, even though it was the Buccaneers who were having most of the play by this stage.

Modise duly brought Pirates level with just under ten minutes to play, scoring a superb goal direct from a free kick some 25 metres out that gave Andre Arendse no chance.

But Supersport replied in the best possible fashion, with defender Bongani Khumalo heading home at the near post from a corner just two minutes after Modise had scored against his former team.

Pirates pushed hard for an equaliser, with Sibusiso Mahlangu bailing Supersport out with a goal line clearance from Tonic Chabalala’s towering header.

The hosts sealed their third win in the Absa Premier League when substitute Mashego fired home a left footed drive from the edge of the box in the first minute of injury time.

Wii al my due respect Pirates is playing fine but ODG must do something about Chansa(GK). I know he wont put him on trnsfer without giving him a chance. But the chances he gave him are more than enough. ODG must Chansa on the transfer list. Please get at least two tall defenders.

I doubt going to the derby if Pirates is going to make it as the previous team has been tempered with. Da Gama has changed the squad that played so well in the previous games and calling for unnecessary pressure from Bucs fans. He can sell Ramudzuli as he is not effective anymore. If we lose with youngsters we can say we are still grooming them but now I don't why Francis Chansa was there. I give up hope for this season.

I rily dont know why the winning combination was tempered.Chansa is realy a flop.ODG must groom Senzo like what Chiefs are doing with Khune. If he fields Chansa 4 de big derby I foresee danger.Good luck for Supersport and hard for the Buccaneers. That's Godfrey Pretoria

I wonder why the folllowing palyers were in the field: Tonic, Rhudzani and Makhanya. Mokoena can play as a winger than a striker due to his poor finishing abilities, Lekgwathi should go back to entral role, Seema should move into the middle of the Park.

I agree with most of the comments about Chansa, ODG nids 2 giv a guy a break simply bcoz when Pirates is making him Keeper, it looses terrible. But as Sundowns fan, i would lik 2 congrutulate Matsatsa A Pitori 4 a brilliant win with 4getting the Urban Warrior who r on da consistent form @ da moment.

I think Tonic Chabalala and Francis Chansa played very badly - not for the first time either. Tonic closed his eyes when he tried to defend the corner where Bongani Khumalo scored - and gave room for Katlego Mashego to seal the game for Supersport United. Pirates need another goalkeeper, not Chansa (he's done enough!)Guys like Cashibe, Rashete need a chance!!!

I agree Chansa should be released because he is over the hill. ODG should hunt for another Keeper. Our fullbacks are not closing down flanks as they should be and as a result we are always vulnerable to crosses.Mdledle is paranoid with attacking and his judgement and timing is appauling.ODG should concentrate on building our tactical awareness

I hope the outcomes of the game gave ODG a lesson that you don't chop and change a good starting combination...I give him a benefit of doubt though ...perhaps he wanted to gave others a chance before the derby...

I've been defending Chansa all along but now I give up. Am still confused why we tempered with a winning combination especially with the goalie department. We need to welcome Makita back in that defensive fold. Ramadzuli & Chansa they already paved their way out in jan.

Is now the correct time to blame all the foreign players and Ramudzuli in the bucs camp. When they were not there we were unbeatable, but as soon as they came back we lost heavily. You be the judge.

Chansa is a real flop. ODG must give Senzo more game time. Chansa must be given his clearence when th transfer window opens. He has reached a ceiling. Mphumzeni

Why ODG opted for Rudzani is a mystery.Changing a winning combination is always negative ask Benitez. Now ODG has made his life very difficult because a loss to Chiefs will put him under considerable pressure.Talks about rebuiding do not hold how can one rebuild a big team like Pirates. We do not need rebuilding we want to win.

The perfomance of the Bucs was below the par,but i would like to single out two players wo were realy out of steam. They are Chansa and Mdledle the less said about Chansa the better, about Mdledle he does'nt know when to dribble, overlap and to retreat back to his position.

I AM VERY MUCH DISAPPOINTED WITH ODG,HOW DO YOU TEMPER WITH A WINNING FORMULA?A PLAYER(SENZO) IS ON TOP OF HIS GAME AND YOU PUT HIM ON THE BENCH,WHY ODG?DO YOU WANT HIS MORALE TO FALL BEFORE THE DERBY?THIS IS NOT GOOD FOR THE PLAYER!CHANSA'S DAYS AT PIRATES ARE GONE...TRY GET MARLIN HE IS NOT USED AT 'DOWNS.RAMUDZULI IS NOT EFFECTIVE AND HE FIRES BLANKS..HIS TIME IS UP!THE REASON WHY WE COULDN'T GET GOAL CHANCES IS BECAUSE WALAZA WENT TO COLLECT FOR HIMSELF DEEP IN THE MIDFIELD!PLEASE ODG AGAINST CHIEFS BRING BACK THOSE YOUNGSTER WHO WALLOPED CELTIC!EL DRACO.BOTS.

we need to congratulate guys that are approaching 2010 and beyond in a good way. Few. Khune, Modise, Chenene and Mathebula, these are the 2010 and beyond guys, Gopp performance guys, Footballere of the season for 2007/08 season nominees must be those guys, at Sundowns I don't see any improvement so far but nonetheless I am not criticising , I am stating my point as a fact.
