Golden Arrows hammer North West Shining Stars in the Nedbank Cup

Posted: 3 March 2012 Time: 21:24

Golden Arrows made it through to the Nedbank Cup round of 16 for the first time when they recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory over North West Shining Stars at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday night.

A brace from Collins Mbesuma, as well as a goal each from Siyabonga Nkosi, Dillon Sheppard and Thamsanqa Gabuza ensured a comfortable victory for Arrows as the visitors failed to offer any reply.

The home side got off to a great start and opened the scoring in the first minute through a slick move which saw Thamsanqa Mkhize playing an accurate cross from the right which Nkosi buried into the back of the net with a well-struck volley.

Then Muhsin Ertugral’s men took complete control of the match as they kept the visitors stuck in their own half.

Mbesuma should’ve doubled the score in the 16th minute when he was played through by a pass over the defence, but instead his attempt lacked power and direction and ended up in the goalkeeper’s gloves.

Five minutes later, defender Robyn Johannes went on an overlap and found himself with space inside the opposition box, but stars goalkeeper Bhekimpilo Ndlovu produced a great save to stop his attempt.

Then Mbesuma missed two great chances as he sent his overhead kick just wide of the post in the 22nd minute and also fired wide of the target two minutes later after he was put through by a great pass from Nkosi.

The visitors’ first chance of the match came in the 38th minute when Emmanuel Sambo did well to cut inside from the left flank before sending his shot just wide of the near post.

However, Stars found themselves two goals down a minute later when Sheppard ran through two defenders before chipping the ball over the exposed goalkeeper to send Arrows into the break with a more respectable two-goal lead.

Muhsin Ertugral’s side continued to dominate possession after the break and soon extended their lead in the 55th minute when Dillon Sheppard played the ball across for Mbesuma, who made no mistake this time as he side-footed the ball into the back of the net.

The Zambian international made up for his earlier misses twenty minutes later when he connected with another pinpoint cross from Mkhize and beat Ndlovu with a glancing header to complete his brace.

Then three minutes later substitute Thamsanqa Gabuza added to the visitors’ misery when he received a pass from Mbesuma and cut inside to beat his marker before firing a low shot past the goalkeeper to end the night with a 5-0 scoreline.
