Penalties needed to separate the sides at Athlone Stadium

Posted: 5 November 2011 Time: 17:56

Santos are through to the semifinals of the 2011 Telkom Knockout after a 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Platinum Stars at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The teams had been deadlocked at 1-1 after extra-time, and so the first shoot-out of the 2011 competition was needed to separate them.

Santos came out on top after Dikwena skipper Mbhuyiselo Sambu saw his tame effort well-saved by Tshepo Motsoeneng in the home goal.

The match itself was an even affair, but Stars will feel that they had done enough to win, though their wastefulness in front of goal eventually came back to bite them.

Santos were ahead on 32 minutes when Jonathan Fransman crossed perfectly for Jonathan Armogam to open the scoring, his first goal since returning to the club at the start of this season.

That was the way it stayed until the dying minutes, when former Ajax Cape Town striker Nathan Paulse netted after being put through on goal.

Neither side could find a winner in extra-time and so penalties were needed to separate the teams, with Santos holding their nerve to convert all of theirs.
