Erwin Isaacs scored a brilliant goal three minutes into injury-time to hand Santos a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United in a Telkom Knockout last 16 match at Athlone Stadium on Friday night.
That the game featured just one goal – and a last-gasp one at that – was something of a surprise. After all, the two teams had conceded no less than 11 goals between them in the last round of league matches.
Maritzburg started strongly and enjoyed the better of the opening 20 minutes, with the strike partnership of Fadlu Davids and Diyo Sibisi looking dangerous whenever they managed to combine.
However, around the midway point of the first half, Santos started to boss the game and created a string of scoring chances, mostly for midfielder Tawonga Chimodzi and Isaacs, though neither was able to capitalise on their opportunities.
The People’s Team must have wondered how they weren’t ahead at halftime, such was their ability to create opportunities against a United defence that was repeatedly being caught square.
Santos continued to dominate in the second half and Maritzburg goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters had to make two excellent saves to keep out efforts from Chimodzi and Eleazar Rodgers around the hour-mark.
The game had a high attrition rate due to injuries – of the six changes, only the tactical switch of Wayne Matle replacing Sibisi for Maritzburg United was not injury-enforced. All of the substitutions were made well before the end of regulation time, hardly ideal in a match that looked as if it would go for 120 minutes.
But right at the death, with mere seconds of injury-time remaining at the end of the 90 minutes, Isaacs struck with a superb volley into the bottom corner of the net.
The goal was certainly a route-one affair, with Rodgers winning a flick-on from the goalkeeper’s long ball to set Isaacs away.
