Ngwenya strike hands Usuthu victory

Posted: 14 November 2007 Time: 21:57

Dumisani Ngwenya scored the only goal of the game to hand AmaZulu a 1-0 win over Platinum Stars in an Absa Premier League fixture at Olympia Park on Wednesday night.

The opening stages of the match was a scrappy affair, with neither side able to hold onto possession for too long.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Ngwenya found the back of the net with low shot following a quick counter-attack after the AmaZulu defence cleared a free-kick by Platinum Stars.

The hosts’ first real shot at goal arrived in the 32nd minute via the boot of Bekithemba Ndlovu, but his long range effort flew narrowly wide.

Stars threatened again in the 35th minute when skipper Stanley Kgatla sent a good cross into the area, but midfielder Wonder Nhleko sent his header just over the crossbar.

Nhleko went close to leveling the score two minutes before the break when his long range effort hit the crossbar, with Usuthu keeper Lawrence Ncala well-beaten.

The score remained 1-0 at half-time.

The second half was an extremely poor advertisement for South African football, with no real chances created by either side, and it was a stop-start affair, littered with silly fouls.

Both teams resorted to long range efforts, which never threatened the opposing goal, and both coaches will do well to drill their players, at least those not reporting for international duty, at training before their next fixture.

Hi guys, I'm so happy for USuthu. They are doing well so far but our coach is my concern. Against SuperSport he played 5 defenders and he even said it before the game that he was looking for 1 point. I don't think that he can get us anywhere with that aproach. After SuperSport had scored, he then took out one defender and put in a midfielder and we started playing. I also share the same sentiment with Langalakhe, Litha Ngxabi is being wasted, so is Wilford Mothapho. Wilford is a left footed player who uses both feet effectively but Clive would play Zwane on the left and Zwane is right footed. I don't know why Clive likes from Zwane this much coz Zwane plays in the middle and he must fight for his position not to be given other people's positions. As for Lovers, stories are that he is injured and others say he spoke bad about other player and was suspended, I don't know which is which but we need him back soon soon soon. Laslty, Clive must get another midfielder to backup Biyela and a quality striker.

AmaZulu have assembled a good squard but at this stage they are performing below their potential and this could be attributed to the kind of coaching that they are exposed to. Mr. Clive Barker is always defensive, relying mostly on counter-attacks. This is well-known by other coaches who always capitalise on it. Last season AmaZulu played good football of possession, attacking and defending in numbers. This style of football enabled them to turn things arround and they managed to undo damage that had suffered under the present coach (Nine straight losses) to reach play-offs.No team would have survived without a change of style. They might be lying fourth on the log,but they can get relegated given the kind of style they are playing. Let's hope our management does something about this.
