Jomo Cosmos produced their best performance in many a year as they thumped Bloemfontein Celtic 3-0 at the Sinaba Stadium on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the 2011 Telkom Knockout.
Ezenkosi have struggled in the League so far this, but produced a great display of attacking football to dispatch Celtic with goals from Ousmane Berthe, Tshidiso Tukane and Katleho Loke.
Berthe opened the scoring when he drove him a brilliant free-kick on seven minutes, leaving Patrick Tignyemb in the visitors’ goal with no chance.
It lifted the spirits of the Cosmos players and they began to play with confidence, something that has been lacking this season.
There second duly arrived on the stroke of halftime, though there was a hint of controversy about it. Loke’s shot was heading in, but Tukane helped it across the line from a seemingly offside position.
However, referee Buyile Gqubule allowed the goal to stand, much to the annoyance of the Celtic players.
It was more of the same after the break and Cosmos made the tie safe on 65 minutes when Loke picked up a beautiful Bamuza Sono pass and beat Tignyemb with ease.
A section of the Celtic support called for the resignation of coach Clinton Larsen in the closing stages of the game, an unsavoury end to a disappointing night for Phunya Sele Sele.
