Niger 2 South Africa 1 in 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

Posted: 4 September 2011 Time: 18:42

Bafana Bafana were beaten 2-1 by Niger in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier Niamey on Sunday.

Niger's goals came from Dankwa E Kofi and Moussa Maazou, before Andile Jali brought one back for Bafana.

The West Africans have jumped to the top of the standings on nine points, though South Africa and Sierra Leone (who beat Egypt 2-1 on Saturday) are still very much in the race to win the group with eight points apiece.

The hosts went 1-0 up in the opening minutes of the match, Kofi rising unmarked for a header from a corner.

Teko Modise had the best chances for South Africa in the first half, hitting the post twice; once early in the match and again, missing an open net, 10 minutes before half-time.

Bafana settled down after conceding early on, but looked to be struggling without the injured Katlego Mphela.

As half-time approached the wind picked up, cooling the heat somewhat, and Bafana looked more in control of the game.

Lehlohonolo Majoro was brought on for Thulani Serero at the beginning of the second half.

Bernard Parker blasted a shot over the bar just after the restart, after being set up by Siphiwe Tshabalala.

Then in the first few minutes of the second half Moussa Mazou scored from close range, after some poor defending by South Africa.

With 20 minutes to go Jali scored a fantastic goal to give South Africa a glimmer of hope, after some great teamwork in midfield.

But it was not enough, and the score remained 2-1, for Pitso Mosimane's first loss as coach of South Africa.

In the remaining Group G fixtures, Egypt play Niger at home and Bafana host Sierra Leone.

Niger are on nine points, Bafana and Sierra Leone on eight, and Egypt – who are out of the running – on two.

To finish top of the group Bafana must win their last match against Sierra Leone, and hope Niger either draw or lose against Egypt.

If we draw with Sierra Leone, and Egypt beat Niger, the top three teams will have nine points, and the placing will come down to goal difference.

As it stands Bafana have a goal difference of +2, Niger +1 and Sierra Leone 0.

The two best second-placed teams from all groups also qualify (apart from Group K, in which winner and runner-up qualify because of the late inclusion of Togo).

If South Africa lose to Sierra Leone, they will be eliminated from the competition.

Pitso has learned a lesson, Modise is bad luck in bafana bafana nithing will b achieved for as long that prima Donna plays, he missed what could have been clear goals even an open net! I rest my case on this one. Even the captain is a clueless guy who is not a captain in his own team!!!

It is always difficult 2 get a win in the West Africa! We were suppose 2 defend in numbers by employing 5-4-1 to get a draw & that's what experience coach do when playing away! Egypt is donating points & our last game is very crucial. Hardluck 2 da boys!

time for the truth...i was about 2 be denounced at bucs bcos i was against my own bucs family pushing the agenda of certain cows called national team material..

modise is a curse, bafana hve done well in his absence, how can he miss an open net. shaba has proved that hes not capable of leading bafana...i worshiped mediocry 4 the whole week...a captain that is substituted in an important game..that says something about his performance.

modise must just be droped...any team he played 4 has never been suceful..were ever he leaves sucess always follow. pitso is not a coach, if he is one..he bought the qualifications. he should have introduced manyisa in the second half 4 either khuboni or modise. jali n ace were gonna bring SA in 2 the game...it was 2 much 2 ask jali, he needs help...n his helper was on the bench waiting 4 the clueless coach 2 bring him in.

all is not lost but i will be happy if we dont qualify....we dont want 2 be humiliated more than this

PITSO + SHABA + TEKO = NO AFRICAN NATIONS CUP QUALIFICATION

@ Sbuda duuu , If Niger Beat Egypt it will be almost impossible for Bafana to qualify, because there are only two spots left for second Best, and some second in some groups have 13 and 11 Points already and If Bafana win against Sierra Leone the best they will have is 11 Point.
Sudan Has 13 Points already and they are second in their Group.

I am sure jali n manyisa were laughing their bones off they were properly laughing at the quality of players lyk parker n majoro. I can hear manyisa saying 2 jali 'wit this team i wont b suprised if u r the leading goal scorer' n jali replyin by saying 'ace if i was a striker a hatrick was on bra bt parker is nt a striker n if he plays against us we shld play 3 at the back'. We need atleast 5 pirates players in the line-up. Football 101 is a course at the University of Orlando.
