Nine-man Swallows down Chiefs

Posted: 7 November 2007 Time: 22:03

Moroka Swallows beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in an Absa Premier League encounter played at the Absa Stadium in Durban on Wednesday night.

The Swallows goals were scored by Sandile Ndlovu and Bevan Fransman, while Shaun Bartlett scored for Chiefs.

The visitors were down to nine men in the second half when they had both Japhet Zwane and Fransman sent off by referee Ace Ngcobo.

The visitors deserved the win simply because they had the better scoring opportunities and looked the more likely to score for most of the match.

In the 19th minute Sibusiso Themba had his shot saved by Chiefs’ keeper Itumeleng Khune.

Swallows had a great chance to take the lead in the 23rd minute when a cross from Zwane found Sandile Ndlovu in the box in a great scoring position, but instead of burying the ball in the back of the net he hammered it over the bar.

Khune was again on hand to deny Swallows when he made a save from a James Chamanga shot in the 34th minute.

Ndlovu again found himself in a great goal scoring position inside the box in the 41st minute, but was denied by a great tackle by Fabian McCarthy.

Zwane hammered a cross into the area which was spectacularly punched out by Khune just before the break to keep the score goalless.

Fransman hammered a long range shot well over the bar just after the break.

Three minutes later Swallows took the lead when a cross found Chamanga on the right just inside the 18-yard area, he passed the ball to Ndlovu, who scored with a tap-in.

In the 54th minute Swallows scored again when the ball was lobbed into the area from the middle by Zwane and Fransman ran forward and got a boot to the ball before Khune could reach it to score.

Chiefs pulled a goal back in the 74th minute when Bartlett scored with a header from a low cross by Jimmy Tau from the right.

In the 81st minute Swallows were down to 10-men when the referee red-carded Japhet Zwane for a dangerous tackle on Jimmy Tau.

Mabhuti Khanyeza missed a great opportunity from about 10-yards out when he hammered his left-footed shot wide after Bartlett headed the ball to him in the 88th minute.

Thuso Phala nearly grabbed the equalizer two minutes later when his shot flew narrowly over the bar from inside the box.

In the 94th minute Swallows were down to 9-men when the referee sent Fransman to the stands for an off the ball incident.

But Swallows held on to get a well-deserved win.

Up the birds...that was superb performance guys. One concern though is ill-discipline showed by both Zwane and Fransman. We need to start being heavy handed on such a behaviour because the image of the game and team is negatively affected. Sorry Amakhosi ...it was not intentional but we had no choice. UP THE BIRDS!!!!!!!!

Swallows proved once more that they are playing better football than Chiefs this season. They proved that their win against us in a Telkom Cup did not mean that they were a better team on the day. Keep up the good work and make us proud once more. UP THE BIRDS!!

Muhsin must resign and leave our club in peace before he leaves it in pieces. How on earth do you field that smaller and inexperience player in Masango ahead of Mooki and Obua?

I think we need someone very strong and good distributor on the midfield.Playmaker like Scara, who can take the opponents without fear.

It was conspicous that with the type of players that Chiefs have they can not challange the League Championship. The performace displayed last night was pathetic for a team of chiefs calibre. One is prompted to quickly question the retainment of Arthur Zwane at Chiefs, the said player is finished. There is no creativity at the Middle field, then one will quickly ask were is chiefs going to get those goals when they play teams such as Sundowns if we fail mediocre teams such as Swallows.

I am very pleased to see swallows dominating the soweto stature this season. We started by pirates and we destroyed chiefs yesterday, i am really happy after those years of suffering caused by Gavin Hunt because of his fear of Kaizer Chiefs. To Makhosi please guys tell Ertugral that chiefs is not just a cup winning team, history tells us that chiefs is a cup and league winning team and Ertugral is doing things differently he only want to win cups and give away the league. I'm sure the Ajax management are smiling from a distance especially Commitis after all the efforts he did for Ertugral to coach again in south Africa and after that Ertugral decided to divorce him for Bobby or Kaizer. Well done Maswaiman we are proud of you.

I ask to differ with Elvis, swallows is not a medicore team this season, they have lost once and they have dominated against the so called big teams, beating pirates, drawing against sundowns and beating your Kaizer Chiefs yesterday. Swallows deserves the win cause chiefs players and their coach were thinking of celtic on saturday while swallows were thinking of 3 points, well done swallows wether you are a mediocre team or not but at the end of the day 3 points from Kaizer Bobby chiefs are in the bag, halalala maswaiman leave them complaining about their players and their cup winning coach.

I Watched the game with huge expectations and i was disapointed by my Gold & Black Team. Mushin must just swallow his pride and recall Gert aand Scara we are really out of depth in the absence of Tshabalala and Mathebula. Lastly how can a team of chiefs calibre have only three strikers? Yesterday there where only 2 strikers which guaranteed them 90 minutes even though they where pathetic.
