AmaKhosi beat off a determined Wits side in quarterfinals

Kaizer Chiefs have advanced to the semifinals of the MTN8 with a hard-fought and entertaining 2-1 victory over Bidvest Wits at Soccer City on Sunday afternoon.

Wits took the lead through Sibusiso Gumede after 11 minutes, but Chiefs hit back with a penalty and debut goal for Bernard Parker, and a Mandla Masango header four minutes before halftime.

Wits had plenty of opportunities to get back into a game they dominated for large patches, but Chiefs held out for the win.

Gumede gave his side the lead after rising highest from a corner to head home past a helpless Itumeleng Khune in the Chiefs goal.

But the lead lasted just seven minutes as Gumede turned from hero to villain, fouling Masango in the penalty-area. Parker held his nerve to step up and open his Chiefs account after a move from Dutch side FC Twente.

And the home side were ahead on 41 minutes when Wits goalkeeper Emile Baron rushed off his line to try and intercept a through-ball for Masango, but the winger chipped the ball into the air over the keeper’s head, and then headed home as the Clever Boys defence stood static.

Jayiya crossed when he might have shot having worked space inside the six-yard box, while Sifiso Myeni was a constant thorn in the side of Chiefs down the left.

Tshabalala worked the fingertips of Baron with a stunning drive from 30-yards, but there were no more goals in the match to enthuse over and it is Chiefs who go into the semifinal draw along with Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town.

we myt have won but our team has no structure nor well-defined style of play! Plus our coach's decisions are appalling. And what is nengomasha still doin there ?! Da man cnt pass, he wasnt winning da ball, everytime he went foward hel get the ball and then runaway backwards! Nxx he has definitely lost his edge. I dont see us winnin this competition....

Eish we won but I was not impressed. We beat the same Wits 4-0 a mere 4 months ago. The gud thing is that the ever wasteful Masango earned us a penalty and scored the winning goal. Our defence was shaky.I can only hope that after a couple of lig games the boys will improve. At least ours was not a lucky win.

Good game by Masango, hopefully he will grow as a player and stop humilation our team. Our team shows that we lost Nahayo at back, points and Musona it shows that players are still trying to build a chemistry. I believe that soon we will gel. Khune and Masango won us the game. This is a dream Semi final the vipe will be gud until the final, what I have been waiting for.

Kaizer Chiefs is getting there. Remember that we've introduced three new players in our first line-up: Majoro, Parker and Ritchie..and Yeye and Dladla were not present even if Dladla came as a sub.So, people must not compare US with Pierats who went to extra time; it does not even suprise us that their late goal was scored by a defender for that matter

Hard fought victory indeed, our defence an midfield was not convincing at all. Shabba must stop falling all ove the show, his new role needs someone who sneaks thru defendrs. Yende is given lots of chances an he doesnt improve. Sweswe was outstanding, he needs to be consistent. Khune grow up, we knw u r the best, u continuing frm last seasn pickng up unnecsry yellw crds
