Stars trounce Lesotho side

Posted: 17 February 2008 Time: 09:15

Platinum Stars made an excellent debut in continental competition when they defeated Lesotho Correctional Services 4-0 in a CAF Champions League encounter in Rustenburg.

The preliminary round, first leg, match saw the Tycoons make a blistering start and effectively end the tie as a contest when they went 3-0 up inside 20 minutes.

Soloman Mathe opened the scoring on 15 minutes with a drive from the edge of the area, before Daniel Tshabalala’s header found the back of the net, seemingly off a Lesotho defender.

The scoring continued with a third goal in five minutes as Koketso Mmotong netted after a fine move from the home side.

It seemed as though that was the way it would end, before Collen Makgopela added a fourth in injury time to complete the rout.

The second leg will be played in a fortnight, though Stars can now afford to rest some of their players ahead of a busy second half of the Absa Premiership season.
