Bloemfontein Celtic, Moroka Swallows share the points

Posted: 22 April 2012 Time: 17:44

Bloemfontein Celtic and Moroka Swallows shared the points after their League clash at the Botshabelo Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon.

Both goals came from the penalty spot, with Lennox Bacela scoring for the home side in the first half, while the league’s leading goalscorer Siyabonga Nomvethe converted for his side midway through the second half.

The visitors kept more possession with patient build-ups from the back, while Celtic threatened with quick breaks involving the likes of Danny Venter, Ruzaigh Gamildien and Lennox Bacela.

The hosts had the first chance in the seventh minute when Erick Mathoho was left unmarked inside the box to head on target from a corner, but his effort lacked the pace to trouble Greg Etafia.

Celtic should’ve taken the lead in the 20th minute when a quick break saw them attacking with numbers, but Gamildien fired his shot over the crossbar when he had options to pass.

Gordon Igesund’s men continued to keep most of the possession, but didn’t have much to show for it as they were kept at bay by the solid Celtic defence.

Nomvethe was able to get past the defence and the goalkeeper in the 33rd minute, but his cross did not find any of his teammates, while Mathebula shot straight at the goalkeeper and then over the crossbar minutes before the break.

Celtic then took the lead in added time when Bacela converted from the penalty spot after Luvhengo Mungomeni was adjudged to have handled the ball.

Both sides started the second half with more urgency, but it was the home side who came close to stretching their lead in the 59th minute when Thokozani mshengu flew in unnoticed at the far post, only for his header to go wide of the target.

Then Venter did well to spring an offside trap in the 62th minute to come face-to-face with Etafia, but his low shot was blocked by the goalkeeper.

The visitors then took advantage of their lifeline and leveled matters four minutes later when Nomvethe slotted his spot-kick after Mathoho had been penalized for bringing down Mathebula inside the box.

Both sides had opportunities to steal all three points in the closing stages of the match but Mathebula saw his freekick coming off the crossbar in the 84th minute, while Phenyo Mongala was denied by great goalkeeping from Etafia at the other end four minutes later.

Disappointing result for Swallows. They didn't play well today, they lacked in moving the ball forward. They could have capitalized since the big two dropped points. Good luck going forward

Celtics used muti against us coz Mathebula's free kick hit da cross bar instead of goin in, lol....these thngs happen in futbol.... M disapointed we ddnt get maximum points bt glad dat no team gets maximum points frm us either... Ja swallows is 1 team dificult to beat in dis 2nd round, home or away.... 2 draws for pirates, sundowns n 1 draw for ssu wil stl means da league title is heading to da Dube Birds coz out of da remaining 4 gmes we wl get a minimum of 10 points....Eish mara I wonder how did cisse and machapa became professional footballer coz dey dnt deserve to get paid for playng soccer, even nontshinga (bafana bafana international) is better that these two players. Da struggle continues. Dnt 4lo me 4lo da birds.

As things stand, all the top four teams on a log remain the serious contenders but of all four Swallows look the less likely to win it.That's my opinion.

@Simangaliso: I told u to wake up from that dreamland mfethu! The Premeirship title is TOO Heavy to be lifted by the Birds. I thought u said u will beat Celtics? Anyway no team is guaranteed the title as yet. Anything is possible in football. Birds were suppose to win the 2003 n 1993 titles but FAILED to Bucs n Sundowns.

@Bonga.... I ddnt say swallows ws definitely gna beat celtics, I said swallows wil nt luz to celtics n dat da maximum points swallows could drop is two and dat is exactly wat happened, I then said dat if my beautiful birds cn collect maximum points, the league wl surely be lifted by Tsutsulupa bcos we wl get ol points in our remaining 4 gmes. I am sure chiefs ws da 1 n only team 2 collect maximum points in dis 2nd round of da lig. Arrows wl bring us 3 points in up coming gme n if we draw dat match then da league wl surely be lifted by da General for sundowns. The swai man has spoken. Dis wl b da best seasn in da psl history as far as da league title is concerned.

@Vezikhanda: What makes you believe that Sundowns can beat both Chiefs and SSU? Don't be misled by Chiefs' current form; they alwayz rise against Sundowns and this time around they will be supported by Bucs 110%. Sundowns' form is questionable after leading with 10 points after 15 games. Swallows were fighting relegation last season and their mission this season was top 8. If Swallows win the title, then Cosmos will survive relegation. BUCS FOREVER!!

@ Vez'ikhanda
So you can recognize that Celtics used muti that prevented DVD's free kick to get inside the net?
So this confirms that Swallows also used muti for three Orlando Pirates shots, that hit the bar last week. Correct?
hahahaaa....

@Jam Jam..........Ja may be, they learnt from Bafana Bafana and Ghana that muti can come in handy sometimes......lol,......It's like chiefs, they have the strongest muti against Swallows....No matter how gud my Beautiful Birds can play......they don't get positive results against chiefs
