Pirates leave it late against Cosmos

Posted: 7 November 2007 Time: 23:03

Lucky Lekgwathi’s late winner handed Orlando Pirates a 1-0 win over Jomo Cosmos in their Absa Premier League clash at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Buccaneers dominated for most of the match, but to break down the solid Ezenkosi defence.

Bennett Chenene should have handed the visitors a sixth minute lead when he found himself in space inside the area, but the winger’s shot was blocked by Cosmos keeper Avril Phali.

Chenene threatened again in the 29th minute with a long range shot, but again Phali thwarted the diminutive 23-year-old.

The Ezenkosi’s first real threat on the Pirates goal arrived in the 36th minute via the boot of the Sam Magalefa, but visiting keeper Senzo Meyiwa made a comfortable save from the midfielder’s free-kick.

Excellent Walaza almost broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when he hit the post with a fierce shot from inside the area after receiving a good pass from Chenene.

The match remained goalless at the break.

Pirates continued their dominance in the second half, but dealt a major blow when Chenene was rushed to hospital following a clash of heads with a Cosmos defender.

Cosmos almost went ahead in the 74th minute through a shot by Anthony Laffor, but Lekgwathi cleared the ball off the line.

Lekgwathi then further enhanced his stature with the Buccaneers’ faithful when he scored from inside the area after running onto a pass by substitute Jorry Merahe.

Cosmos were then dealt a blow while Pirates were still celebrating, when midfielder Innocent Ntsume was asked to leave the bench following his comments made to the assistant referee.

I am happy to see the progress ODG is making in the Pirates team. My only concern is on the Goal-keeper. The guy cannot time his runs, how often do you see defenders clearing balls that he was suppose to get. He is always confused and lacks confidence. But against all this he is a good keeper, he just needs to get his act okay and things will work for him. May be a loan to a small team in Mvela league will do much to his confidence.

Another player in hospital. Jomo must calm down his gladiators who turn soccer fields into Coloseum.

what a way not to advertise SA football, i mean Jomo came to Loftus for one reason and one reason only. to sit back and stop what ever Pirates try to do. it was a practice match, no wonder people are not attending Cosnos games. well done for Pirates for try to play in those difficult condition. Nice Game Pirate. Jomo has done it again, breaking peoples legs and ending people careers. Can somebody tell me why the assist ref couldnt pick up that tackle on Mdledle? And the ref ignored an injured player.
