Maritzburg United, Santos share spoils

Posted: 8 April 2012 Time: 17:32

Santos collected their first points in five League matches when they came back from a goal down to force a 1-1 draw against Maritzburg United.

Diyo Sibisi put the home side ahead in the first half, only for his goal to be cancelled by a second half strike from substitute Jonathan Armogam.

United were the better side in the opening minutes of the game, but they were let down by their finishing as their shots failed to hit the target.

The first chance of the match fell for the home side in the 14th minute when Cuthbert Malajila broke through on the left side before playing the ball across the goalmouth, but Chesly Jampies was able to clear the danger.

Seven minutes later Malajila connected with a cross from Sibisi with a first-time volley, but goalkeeper Dembo Touray made a great save to keep the ball out.

Then in the 26th minute it was Felix Obada’s turn to beat Jampies on the right before finding Wayne Matle at the far post, only for his header to sail over the crossbar.

United eventually opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when Kulegani Madondo delivered a long pass into the box to find Sibisi between two defenders, but the forward did well to shift to the left before beating Touray with a low shot.

The Team of Choice continued to pile pressure on Santos left-back and two minutes later Malajila used his pace on the flank before floating his cross towards the far post where Sibisi was lurking, but Thabiso Ntloana was able to clear in the nick of time.

Then in the 39th minute Shafeeq Arendse created the first real chance for the visitors with a great turn just outside the penalty to lose his marker, but his final shot flew over the crossbar, while Bheki Shabangu saw his long range shot pushed wide by Walter five minutes later.

Santos continued from where they left off in the second half and again it was Shabangu who came close to finding the equalizer six minutes after the break when he met a Jurie Basie cross at the near post, but his headed effort went just wide of the target.

Two minutes later, Malajila had a chance to extend the lead for United when he received a long pass on the edge of the box and cut inside to beat the defender, but his shot was disappointing as it went straight to Touray.

United were eventually punished for all their wasted chances in the 77th minute when substitute Jonathan Armogam fired home from a tight angle after receiving a through pass from Thabiso Ntloana.

Both sides would have chances to seal the game in the closing stages but in the end the equalizer proved to be the decisive goal as the match ended in a draw.
