Santos lose at home to Platinum Stars

Posted: 4 April 2012 Time: 21:57

Platinum Stars took an important step away from the relegation zone and closer to the top eight with a 2-1 win over Santos at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.

Santos suffered a huge blow early on when Erwin Isaacs was red-carded for a reckless challenge on Lindokuhle Mbatha.

Despite their setback, it was the hosts who opened the scoring; Eleazar Rodgers netting his ninth League goal of the season with a header from Matthew Pattison’s free-kick.

Stars began to enjoy more of the ball possession, but although they threatened down the wings, the final ball was lacking from the visiting team.

Santos always looked a threat on the counter-attack, and had more chances as first Tyren Arendse had an effort tipped over the bar, and then Pattison was denied by some smart keeping by Jackson Mabokgwane.

The visiting side grew stronger and stronger as the second half progressed. Chances began to come for Dikwena as Sipho Jembela headed wide, with Henrico Botes doing likewise with a shot.

They earned a 70th-minute penalty after Thabiso Ntloana was ruled to have fouled Patrick Malokase; Vuyo Mere making no mistake with the penalty.

Two minutes later and Dikwena were ahead for the first time when Malokase struck with a clinical header.

Santos tried hard to get back into the game, but were thwarted by some sturdy defence from the visiting side, who in the end were comfortably able to hold out for the win and three points.

Nathan Paulse could well have made it 3-1 late on, but squandered a great chance after Touray had pushed forward for a corner.
