Tokelo Rantie scored a brace, Benni McCarthy a penalty, and Edward Manqele a consolation goal as Orlando Pirates beat Free State Stars 3-1 on Wednesday night at Orlando Stadium.
Stars had knocked the Buccaneers out of the Nedbank Cup over the weekend, but there was to be no repeat at Orlando Stadium.
Pirates went into the lead as early as the second minute before the majority of the fans had settled in when Rantie forced his way past the Stars defenders in the penalty box on the right side and his shot beat goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene.
Stars had few ideas and shots from range were their only hope as Coldrin Coetzee’s 25-yard shot in the 21st minute went over the bar.
Three minutes later Mzikayise Mashaba dribbled his way past the Pirates defence on the right, but his shot from 18-yards went wide of the upright.
The match went to half time with Bucs leading 1-0, but four minutes after the restart substitute Dove Wome played in Manqele, and Stars’ leading goalscorer made no mistake as coolly finished with an excellent right-footed shot.
However, Pirates reclaimed the lead in 57th minute when Sadate Akoriko brought down Rantie in the box and the referee awarded a penalty, which McCarthy tucked home.
Josephs was the hero shortly afterwards as he saved Manqele’s powerful close-range shot.
Pirates then put the match beyond reach of Steve Khompela’s team in the 78th minute when McCarthy played in Rantie and the striker scored his second of the match with an excellent lob.
