Santos suffered a 2-1 defeat to Golden Arrows at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.
Siyabonga Nkosi opened the scoring for Arrows, before Neo Segalo equalised. Thamsanqa Gabuza got the winner five minutes from time.
Neither goalkeeper was tested early on as both sides found space and opportunities limited in front of goal.
The home team had the first two chances as Erwin Isaacs had a volley saved by Nkosingiphile Gumede, before Matthew Pattison's powerful drive crashed into the woodwork.
Arrows had not done much to threaten the Santos goal, yet they went ahead after 30 minutes when Nkosi got a faint touch to steer Elrio van Heerden’s free-kick past Pa Demba Touray.
It took a moment of inspiration from Isaacs to get the Cape side back on level terms as he sprinted to the byline and pulled the ball back for Segalo to slot home.
The game remained tight after the restart as both sides refused to give away chances or ball possession.
Eleazar Rodgers had the first real chance of the second stanza, having his shot saved on the line, following Salmaan King's cross from out on the left.
Pattison then fired his shot into the net, before Santos sub Riaan Eugene failed to get a decisive touch onto King's cross.
The game moved into the final five minutes and it was Gabuza who proved to be the match winner as he picked up on a loose ball on the edge of the box and fired a left-footer into the bottom corner.
