Moroka Swallows beat Free State Stars 1-0

Posted: 14 March 2012 Time: 21:45

David Mathebula's goal handed Moroka Swallows a valuable away win at Free State Stars.

It is Stars' first loss of the season at Charles Mopeli Stadium in Phuthaditjhaba, where they are difficult to beat.

The Birds move up to fourth on the log, on 33 points, beneath Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on goal-difference.

The on-form Mathebula got on the end of a cross from Siyabonga Nomvete to hit home after 14 minutes of play.

Ea Lla Koto went in search of the equaliser, and Mpho Makola came closest, but was denied by Swallows goalkeeper Greg Etafia.

Etafia was called into action again just before half-time, when Boitumelo Sekgobela had a go at goal, but the Nigerian was up to the task.

Bennett Chenene went narrowly wide for Swallows, before Mathebula's free-kick was saved by Bruce Mtshali in the Stars goal.

Around the hour-mark Tshidiso Mosikidi and Danny Mbo both squandered chances to equalise for the hosts, but both shot wide, before Mosikidi tried a long-range effort that went just wide of goal.

Stars were desperate to salvage a point, and Nomvete took advantage, creating something out of nothing against the run of play, but his final shot was saved well by Mtshali.

Stars remain in seventh place on the table, with 29 points.

Thanx Gordon, you made a huge difference in the nest. Chiefs coach was very stupid for failing to spot a talent from you Mathebula ( you are simply the best). If SAFA wants us to be best in Africa, Gordon is our solution coz he seem to know what is doing unlike those people who are failing to read the rules of the game.Offensive you are doing well,up the birds.Nomvethe please make sure that you keep on banging those goals. Remember the league belongs to the Sea Robbers

I am looking forward to another 3 points on saturday night. Maswaiswai, our patience with the team is now paying off and I am glad that We (maswaiswai) seem to have patience........and believe every south african soccer fan has seen the consequences of being impatient last night,,,, An impatient team was walloped 3-0 by a team struggling to escape the relagation zone... lol.......We failed in all other trophies so far this season so I believe our team will make us proud by winning the league for us......Dont 4lo me 4lo the Birds!!!!!
