AmaZulu surprised Premiership title chasers SuperSport United, beating them 1-0 on Saturday night.
Usuthu captain Ayanda Dlamini got his first goal of the season, through United keeper Ronwen Williams' legs, to keep his team's top-eight aspirations alive.
It was only SuperSport's fourth loss of the season, but after a lacklustre performance they slip to third on the log. Matsatsantsa played out the last minutes with 10 men after Morgan Gould was sent off.
Three points would have boosted United to within a point of Mamelodi Sundowns, who were held to a draw Moroka Swallows on Friday.
United created just one chance in the first half, when Atasuye Nyondo pounced on a loose ball inside the AmaZulu penalty area, but his attempt was blocked by Felix Bukasa-Kasongo.
Gavin Hunt brought on Jabu Maluleke and veteran Sibusiso Zuma in the second half, and Maluleke had a chance in the 63rd minute, when his header hit the woodwork from a corner.
Franklin Cale tried a shot from distance shortly after, but it went wide.
Usuthu were happy to defend their lead, but did come close when Dlamini made a run on goal, but he was impeded by Gould, who was shown a straight red card for the professional foul.
Maluleke had a late chance for an equaliser, but his shot went wide to sum up his team's poor performance.
