Platinum Stars draw 0-0 with Moroka Swallows

Posted: 17 December 2011 Time: 17:21

Platinum Stars and Moroka Swallows had to settle for a point each when their Premiership clash ended in a 0-0 draw at a scorching Moruleng Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Although both sides created a few scoring chances, the match failed to come to life, with both sets of players battling in the hot conditions.

Lefa Tsutsulupa got the first shot on target in the opening minute when he benefitted from Phelelani Mpangase's indecisiveness inside the box, but goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane did well to get his hands on the ball with Siyabonga Nomvete waiting to pounce.

Seven minutes later Nomvete received a brilliant through pass from David Mathebula, but sent his effort wide.

The home side got their first chance in the 19th minute when Thuso Phala ran through the defence to meet a chipped pass from Henrico Botes, but his poor first touch sent the ball into Greg Etafia's gloves.

Swallows almost took the lead in the 33rd minute when Stars captain Mbuyiselo Sambu almost scored an own-goal as he tried to head a Tsutsulupa free-kick, but Mpontshane tipped the ball over the crossbar.

Three minutes later it was Dikwena who threatened at the other end when Phala combined with Botes, but Etafia came out early to block the latter's low shot.

Both sides created half-chances early in the second half with Sibusiso Msomi's long-range shot just missing the target in the 61st minute, while Lerato Chabangu managed to get a curled shot on target three minutes later, but within Mpontshane's reach.

On 75 minutes substitute Joseph Molangoane found himself through on goal, only to be denied by a well-timed tackle from Luvhengo Mungomeni.

Stars almost scored from the resulting corner but Sambu's shot was blocked off the line and the ball bounced around in the area before Swallows managed to get it clear.

Subsitute Terrence Mandaza almost scored with his first touch in the final minute of the game when he collected a pass from Molangoane, but he was off balance when he took his shot and Etafia was able to make the save.
