Jomo Cosmos register first League win of season against Platinum Stars

Posted: 3 December 2011 Time: 19:55

Jomo Cosmos earned their first three-pointer of the season as they beat Platinum Stars 2-1 at the Sinaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The sparse crowd in Daveyton had little to get excited about in the first half as there were only two real chances on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

The first fell to Bamuza Sono in the third minute, but his shot was tame and no threat.

The only other proper chance came in the dying seconds of the half as Siyabonga Nhlapo had his half-volley turned over the bar by Siyabonga Mpontshane.

In between it was a dour and uninspiring affair, with both sides committed and uncompromising in the tackle, but with a result that there was very little enterprising or attacking football.

It took only a few seconds of second half action for the complexion of the game to change as Nhlapo notched his third goal of the season with a brilliant curling shot into the top corner, from outside the box.

Three minutes later and Cosmos further pressed home their advantage as defender Ousmane Berthe was given space in the box which allowed him to thud a header into the net, following Sono’s corner kick.

As the game moved into the final 20 minutes Cosmos found themselves under increasing pressure as first Avril Phali pulled off a great stop from Sambu’s volley and then Thuso Phala wasted a fantastic chance with poor technique at the back post.

But in the 79th minute the pressure paid off for Dikwena as Terence Mandaza slotted into an empty net from eight yards after Phali had parried a low cross.

Ezenkosi found themselves with their backs against the wall for the final 10 minutes of the game, but somehow they survived several close shaves and goal mouth scrambles to secure the much-needed win.

Congratulations to my beloved team!! First win!! I hope we get stronger from here on.

However, why do we need to defend that much when we are only leading the by a single goal? I did not like that approach. Please Bra J, get the players to continue on the attack, gain more confidence in attacking and look to convert the chances they get. Stars could have easily been awarded a penalty.

Well done to BraJ and the entire Cosmos brand. The monkey is off their back now, they just need to believe that they can get more victories going forward.

Well done and keep going. I rather have Cosmos in the league than Santos and Leopards

I am now beginning to doubt Kickoff report as credible. Yesterday they wrote Chiefs beat Sundown 2-0 and this time Cosmos game was played Makhulong Stadium.
