Moroka Swallows beat Ajax Cape Town in exciting League clash

Posted: 28 October 2011 Time: 21:57

Moroka Swallows defeated Ajax Cape Town 3-2 at Dobsonville Stadium on Friday to move to the top of the Premiership standings.

The Swallows goals were scored by a Giorgi Nergadze and a brace from Siyabonga Nomvete while Khama Billiat and Brent Carelse scored for Ajax.

Thembinkosi Fanteni missed a penalty late in the game and Ajax played with 10-men from the 78th minute after having Nhlanhla Vilakazi red-carded for a dangerous tackle.

The Birds have now won five of their last six league games – but they very nearly threw this game away in the last 15 minutes, conceding two goals to an Urban Warriors team who refused to give in... even when they were three goals down and reduced to ten men.

The first genuine chance of the game went the way of Ajax, with Terror Fanteni getting away a shot that was half saved by goalkeeper Greg Etafia – defender Luvhengo Mungomeni then cleared the loose ball before it could loop into the back of the net.

That Ajax chance seemed to spark Swallows into life and they went on to dominate the rest of the first half, repeatedly testing goalkeeper Sander Westerveld from both long range attempts and set pieces.

Ajax fielded the versatile Nhlanhla Shabalala as a makeshift centre-back but he really struggled and was lucky not to be punished by Lerato Chabangu and Siyabonga Nomvete after completely missing a clearance in the 31st minute.

But just ten minutes later Shabalala conceded a soft penalty, bringing down Nomvete in the box by wrestling him to the ground. The Swallows striker duly converted the penalty to leave the Soweto side 1-0 up at the half time break.

And within fifteen minutes of the restart, the Birds were 3-0 up. Giorgi Nergadze netted a sublime goal on 50 minutes – cracking home a left-footed volley after a brilliantly worked corner kick routine – and Nomvete got his second of the night ten minutes later from a route-one attack.

At that stage it seemed as if Swallows could rack up a really impressive score line, such was their dominance. However, they took their foot off the pedal and allowed Ajax back into the game, despite the visitors being reduced to ten men on 73 minutes when Nhlanhla Vilakazi was red carded for kicking out in retaliation at MacBeth Sibaya.

Khama Billiat netted on 75 minutes after controlling a long ball out of defence, and Ajax soon had a chance to pull another back when they were awarded a penalty. Fanteni’s kick was saved by Etafia but a retake was ordered – the second spot kick was also kept out by the Nigerian ‘keeper.

Substitute Brent Carelse rattled the crossbar as the Urban Warriors continued to press forward and the midfielder did managed to get his name on the score sheet on 88 minutes, converting a spot kick to set up a tense final few minutes.

Swallows, though, saw out the match to clinch their sixth win from seven outings in all competitions.

ha ha ha, nomvete is enjoying himself at SwaiSwai, he is just proving the point to the teams that didn't want to sign him when he came back abroad saying that he is too old now what they are doing and benefiting from their fuc####kin so-called youngsters

nomvete is s.a best striker since his introduction in professional futball, pitso got it wrong by ignoring him,age is nothing, his peers r drogba,w want to c him during th mandela challenge in p.e,h must b in th starting line up,with tsutsulupa, shabba ,kuboni,yeye,digkacoi,...if h was selected against sierra leon,s.a should hv qualified, mpela has 1 style of play...i hope h does nt get injured....if igesund continues like this, swallows can clinch th league title, but all they need is to sign 1 or 2 clever defenders,....i'm kosi 4 lyf....but i like nomvete...

Oh swallows i hope and really hope you remember these few days cause the nextime you play, nothing would go well for you,we will crush you nextweek forsure. We gonna make easy meat out of you. Infact had it not be for fanteni's miss penalty, you wouldn't even blab now .you were nearly embarrassed by 10men and then you thinking of upsetting the champs, believe like jomo but, soon you will be convinced by bucselona teaching you a very important lesson about what inform really means. You are not onform but luck is on your side.

Watch what we do to mjomane on sunday then talk again.

Yes swallows supporters are like the siwelele ones singing and dancing they hards out ,even when there are just 10 on their books. This team had very, very troubled times and now are atleast enjoying they football and winning a few on the trot but, hey im afraid for them cause like maritzburg just before the supersport game they are talking like world beaters and just watch what'll happen nextweek, just you wait and see. We'll fry these birds on the coals. And they meat would be spiced very strong also but tasty.
