Free State Stars draw with Bidvest Wits

Posted: 18 September 2011 Time: 17:09

While the match between Free State Stars and Bidvest Wits finished goalless at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on Sunday, Roger de Sa will be the happier of the two managers with an away point.

It was end-to-end action from the opening whistle, but with neither side really taking the ascendency.

While the build-up play from both sides was slick and impressive no team could finish their chances in the opening 45 minutes.

Stars were the first team to mount an attack in the fourth minute when Noah Chivuta drove forward and unleashed a thunderbolt which sailed narrowly wide of the target.

Three minutes later and Sibusiso Vilakazi was the first Wits player to pester the Ea Lla Koto goal with 20-yard shot that also went agonisingly wide of the intended target.

While there was plenty of attacking going on neither keeper was really tested until the 19th minute when Edward Mnqele called Energy Murambadoro into action for the first time.

Murambadoro, though, was up for the challenge and made a great save diving low to his left to parry Mnqele’s 16-yard shot around the post.

Six minutes later, however, and Murambadoro almost gifted Stars the game’s first goal when he spilled a Chivuta cross straight into the path of Ouro Sadate, but he dragged his shot wide from only 10 yards out.

For Wits, their best chance of the half came in the 38th minute when Sifiso Vilakazi latched onto a cross with a powerful header which bounced off the top of the Stars crossbar and out of play.

The second half was not much better than the first. Again both sides, much like in the first stanza, had to resort to shooting from long range but with very little effect.

In the end the game filtered out to a goalless draw as both team took a share of the spoils.
