Moroka Swallows beat Free State Stars in a League match on Wednesday

Posted: 14 September 2011 Time: 21:18

Two first half goals from David Mathebula and Lefa Tsutsulupa saw Moroka Swallows back to winning ways as they beat Free State Stars 2-1 in an Absa Premiership match at the Dobsonville stadium on Wednesday night.

Boitumelo Sekgobela scored in the second half for Stars.

The Birds were on the attack from the word go and Giorgi Nergadze should really have given them the lead in the sixth minute when he latched onto a corner-kick, but his header from eight-yards out was a poor one and went narrowly wide.

Joseph Makhanya was the next to pester the Ea Lla Koto goal with a 16-yard shot in the tenth minute, but he found Kennedy Mweene in fine form as he made a superb save.

In the 25th minute, Mweene denied Makhanya with a brilliant save. The Birds man concluded a good passing move with a stinging shot from 12-yards out, but Mweene tipped the ball over the crossbar with a fingertip save.

Finally, in the 31st minute Swallows made their constant pressure pay off when Mathebula found the back of the net with a magnificently placed 25-yard free-kick. The Birds midfielder curled the ball around the defensive wall and into the bottom left-hand corner of the net, 1-0.

Stars only real chance of the half came in the 38th minute when Edward Mnqele made Greg Etafia do his only work of the half. Mnqele let rip from just inside the 18-yard box, but Etafia was alert to the danger parrying the shot around the post.

The Ea Lla Koto’s joy, though, was short lived as the Swallows captain doubled his side’s lead in the 41st minute. Tsutsulupa was clinical in front of goal when he found himself through on goal and buried the ball past Mweene from 12-yards out, 2-0.

The second half saw Swallows take their foot of the pedal as they seemed content to coast on their two goal lead. Consequently, it made for a rather dull half as Stars struggled to create goal scoring opportunities. Goal mouth action in general was few and far between.

Eleven minutes from time, though, the Ea Lla Koto did make for a nail biting finish as Boitumelo Sekgobela found the back of the net after latching onto a Noah Chivuta cross and headed the ball home, 2-1.

Still, even though they controlled the final ten minutes of the game Stars were unable to really threaten the Swallows goal as the game ended 2-1.
