Ajax beat Santos in Cape Town derby

Posted: 24 August 2011 Time: 21:15

Santos’ poor run of results continued as they went down 1-0 to Ajax Cape Town at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.

Ajax took just five minutes to take the lead, Khama Billiat showing his pace as he ran on to Terror Fanteni’s through ball, leaving Pere Ariweriyai for dead before finishing well.

Santos’ best chance of the opening half came in the 23rd minute when Erwin Isaacs picked out Jurie Basie, but Sean Roberts make a superb save to preserve the slender lead.

With about 10 minutes to go before the end of the half, Ajax had two chances through Billiat and George Maluleka, but the former shot wildly over the bar and the latter had his shot saved by Roberts.

Ajax had the first chance of the second half, but somehow the Santos defence somehow managed to keep out both Lebo Manyama and then Terror Fanteni.

The Peoples’ Team then began to come back into the game, with chances falling to Isaacs, who sent a sitter wide, while both Vuyisile Wana and Eleazar Rodgers had shots saved by Roberts.

Santos would certainly have felt their second half performance merited a goal, but Ajax hung on with some determined defending to earn their first league win of the season.

@Tshepo Mokoena,
Billiat has already played for Zim at senior level therefore he cant change that anymore & forever.Its very nice to admire a good player,even me as a Zimbo,i wish all our good players had a very organised Football Association & sponsors like SA.Zimbabwe have good players but their talent is being put to waste by our Corrupt & money hungry football admistrators.Zimbabwean football is being run by Fraudsters!Yeah,in a way i so wish all Zim good players were South African to prove their worth at National Team Level.
