Mbulelo Mabizela scored on his Bidvest Wits debut as his club were held to a 2-2 draw by Maroitzburg United.
The Team of Choice twice fought back from a goal down to force a share of the spoils, with Diyso Sibisi and Wayne Matle cancelling out goals from Clever Boys centre-backs Mabizela and Derrick Spencer.
The hosts came within inches of scoring in the first 30 seconds of the game as new signing Prince Olomu hit the base of the post with a headed effort from Sibisi’s cross.
That early chance spurred on the home team to dominate for most of the first half-hour, though all they managed to create were two speculative long range efforts from Sibisi and Felix Obada.
Wits had rarely threatened in the opening stages, but broke the deadlock on 29 minutes when Mabizela ghosted in at the back post to steer Fabricio Rodrigues’ free-kick past Tashrique Goldman.
The visitors retained their one-goal advantage until a remarkable burst of three goals in the space of four minutes in the final quarter.
First, Maritzburg drew level at 1-1 in the 73rd minute when Sibisi coolly converted a penalty. The spot-kick had been awarded after Baron missed a cross and left-back Patrick Phungwayo handled in the area.
Three minutes later the Clever Boys restored their lead when Derrick Spencer headed home at the far post from a Thando Mngomeni free kick.
But the Team of Choice made it 2-2 just a minute later in somewhat bizarre fashion. Substitute Wayne Matle forced his way past Spencer before scoring into an empty net from a tight angle. However, moments before the goal Baron appeared to twist his ankle in the turf and simply collapsed, not making any attempt to get up – Matle kept his cool and took advantage.
