Mamelodi Sundowns draw 0-0 with AmaZulu

Posted: 14 August 2011 Time: 17:01

Sundowns were held to a goalless draw by AmaZulu in their first match of the season at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It was a frustrating match for Sundowns as their star-studded midfield was not allowed to string passes together.

AmaZulu, on the other hand, were content with sitting at the back and managed to threaten Sundowns with a few quick breaks, but coach Manqoba Mngqithi will be pleased at how his young charges contained The Brazilians.

Sundowns took control of the match from the first whistle, but they were not allowed to create much clear-cut opportunities by the organised Usuthu defence.

The first chance fell for Mabhuti Khenyeza, who found himself with space on the left, but his shot went wide in the eighth minute.

Carlington Nyadombo received a yellow card for a clumsy double-footed tackle on Katlego Mphela just outside the box. Mphela stepped up, but his free-kick went straight into Tapuwa Kapini’s hands.

Sundowns continued to press forward, using their wingbacks to add more numbers, and it almost paid off in the 26th minute when Doctor Mampuru went on a dazzling run which was stopped illegally by Ramson Zhuwawo on the edge of the box.

Modise’s attempt from the free-kick was poor as his tame shot failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

Usuthu almost took the lead against the run of play when Andile Khumalo fired in a long-range shot, but Sundowns goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands pulled off a one-handed save to tip the ball over for a corner.

The resulting corner almost produced a goal but Sandilands was alert enough to block Sibusiso Hadebe’s header; the ball bounced around the box a few times before Method Mwanjali cleared the danger.

AmaZulu almost scored when Namibian striker Tangeni Shipahu latched onto a brilliant long pass from Hadebe, but his shot struck the upright with Sandilands well-beaten.

Sundowns seemed to lose their tempo after the break, while Usuthu continued to grow in confidence. Dumisani Zwane should’ve opened the scoring in the 70th minute when he attacked the box from the right - he took a powerful shot that struck Sandilands in the face when a deft chip would’ve been the better option.

Mushekwi’s first chance came in the 76th minute but his looped header sailed past the top corner.

With AmaZulu keeping all players behind the ball, it was very difficult for Sundowns to feed Bafana Bafana star Katlego Mphela and Mushekwi, and in the end a goalless draw was a fair result.

Contrary to popular belief, Surprise Moriri is perfect for the instigator role he's currently deployed at.

I'm not too perturbed about the result though, Downs are on the mend.

Neeskens needs time, at this stage we'd rather take a point but play well, especially considering that Amazulu parked taxis at the back.

Still Brasilia!

say it once more "nyatamarised and google earth". winning preseason in swazi kingdom does not make robocop a team to beat. the other ordinary player missed an open net. i feel for motsepe, his money is being waisted.

the game against the galaxy will kiss nespray career in south africa gudbye.

rocop fc never disapoint the haters, at last the is something to brag about after i was disapointed last night. this ex barcelona plyers will get sundoms nowher

it looks like we are going 2 defend the 3ple easy

@abijan95

i quote "PSL spokesperson Altaaf Kazi cited security as the reason for the switch of venue (sundoms against cosmos)". so the life of robocop fc coach nespray, is already under threat. coaching this tuckshop team is a death trap. clown coach pack your bags while time allows it.

after winning the treble coaches no longer feel safe. when discusing a contract i heard motsepe mentioned the treble.

robocop fc should play their games at egypt military stadium, atleast safety is guaranteed.

treble + adidas three stripes = the treble champs

mabhakaniya. Remember i said this team will b fighting the relegation battle by the tym the season ends mark my words this is the beginning of the end. Last season they won their 1st five games this season they will draw their 1st five. Bt i think motsepe is teachin them a lesson for their behavior towards habas. Motsepe brought a useless coach just to spite the fans, show them the boss motsepe its ur money after all if they complain he will tell u 2 stop suppoting his team he will buy his own supporters. i didnt think motsepe was this smart. Moriri as an anchor man, dont be suprised if zothwana becomes ur 3rd choice goalkeeper n teko becomes ur centre back. I c chaos at retirement village.
