Vasco da Gama march through to quarters of Nedbank Cup

Posted: 2 April 2011 Time: 18:06

Vasco da Gama advanced to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup when they beat Platinum Stars 2-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors were the better side throughout, scoring twice in the first half -- despite 30 degree heat in Rustenburg -- and were deserved winners.

Keenin Lesch and Jonathan Armogam got the goals for Vasco.

Vasco made their intentions clear in the 19th minute when Rudi Isaacs shot wide from close range.

And the Cap side opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Lesch put them ahead after accepting a great pass from Isaacs.

Stars came close to getting an equaliser when Bradley Grobler rounded Postnet Omony in the 36th minute, but his shot struck the upright.

Two minutes later, Armogam wasted a good opportunity when he put his shot over the crossbar after a great run on the left flank.

On the stroke of half-time, Armogam made up for his earlier miss when he tapped in a cross from Sibusiso Zuma to give his side a 2-0 half-time lead.

In an attempt to get some goals, Owen da Gama pulled off Dillon Sheppard and Stanley Kgatla for Mduduzi Nyanda and Almiro Lobo.

But Zuma continued giving Stars defenders all sorts of trouble, making dangerous runs and creating chances for his teammates.

In the 51st minute, Zuma made a great run on the right flank before offloading to Lesch who miskicked inside the box.

Solomon Mathe wasted a good chance to pull one back for Stars as he hit his shot over the crossbar from the edge of the box in the 60th.

Substitute Thuso Phala also forced a save from Omony and the ball went for a corner.

Stars pushed everything into attack but Vasco's defence was solid and managed to hold on the 2-0 lead.

I would like to salute Aaron Mokoena to be the first South African player to reach 107 caps, but we must make a goodbye game for him and we need to honour him as England had done it why we?
